Do you need a smart tv for these boxes to work, or just a normal tv with a HDMI port?

Ya i have a quad core 1GB 4K capable on a 100" projector. Cancelled directv months ago. Xmbc not working as a practical tv replacement. Some channels just dont connect and end up with errors. So netflix and youtube right chew

How reliable are these boxes now ?
Most f the content is hosted underground,
Ie hit and miss
The ones yo pay for basically have their own repository of movies but still relying on
Some singulr human running a server in their bedroom

I got an MIII box yesterday and Kodi is a big improvement from XBMC from a few years ago, however it is still a hit and miss with not all streams working all the time.

Most things do work though - I think it's worth it, though it takes some getting used to.

The easier, more user friendly option IMO, is to pay for Netflix, Hulu, Vudu, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Now, CBS, ABC etc. They work 24/7!!

However if you want all the latest movies, TV shows, channels for free and you don't mind a lil stress when feeds don't work - then a Kodi box is the thing for you

^ yes that's why I said it is an improvement from the earlier versions when it was XBMC. The newer version (Kodi) has better features.

Kodi is open source and can be installed on almost all operating systems. There are lots of repositories but Fusion seems to be the best. Also, there are lots of youtube videos on installation of Kodi, tweaks and add-ons. I use a firestick on my smart tv plus installed it on all laptops. You need a minimum of 2 mbps internet though for it to work well.

Good add-ons are:
Navi-X
1Channel
Genesis
Phoenix

Will there ever be a time when the authorities clamp down and shut down the various repositories
Like how they shutdown napster and many torrents?

yes the possibility exists. It is not entirely legal.

pugboy wrote:Who does these subscriptions go to?
Kodi does not require a subscription. Unless you are running a subscription service on your device such as Netflix or Hulu etc. Those services are legal.

The IPTV service may be a subscription but it is paid to whoever if offering the channel aggregation and service - it isn't entirely legal but they are offering the service for a fee.
