ODPM issues Safety Tips based on TT MET’s official declaration of the start of the
Rainy Season/Hurricane Season 2015.
The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (MET Office) has officially declared the start of the 2015 Rainy Season, heralded by the showery activity currently being experienced over the nation which is associated with the passage of a Tropical Wave.
Sequences of rainy episodes can be anticipated over the next four (4) to five (5) months, interrupted by short-lived fair conditions. Preliminary analysis by the MET Office indicates that for June to the December 2015, large parts of Trinidad are likely to be wetter than usual with the wettest area likely being north Trinidad. However, Tobago, south-western Trinidad and isolated parts of north-eastern and north-western Trinidad have increased chances for drier than usual.
The Atlantic Hurricane Season will begin on June 01st, 2015. According to the Atlantic Basin Season Hurricane Forecast for 2015 issued by the Colorado State University, this season is expected to be one of the least active seasons since the middle of the 20th century with the expected formation of 7 named storms, 3 hurricanes and 1 major hurricane (Category 3 and The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) wishes to advise citizens to be mindful of the likelihood of flooding in flood-prone areas and urges all members of the public to take all measures to preserve life and property. We also wish to underscore the importance of being prepared for the Hurricane Season, in spite of the forecasted low-activity.
The ODPM continues to work closely with all key stakeholders including the MET Office, the Ministry of Local Government (MOLG), the National Operations Centre (NOC) and all first responder agencies to ensure that measures are taken to mitigate the potential impacts of the Rainy Season and the Hurricane Season and we will advise the public accordingly.
