Was in gulf and blue river yesterday. Plenty small reds, cuberas, lippy, cro cro. We released all catfish, stingrays and juvenile tarpon. Herring schools like crazy, they all appeared around 6pm, bite disappeared after that

Went banking in the Gulf today. Mixture of cro cro, red fish, butter fish, salmon and some others. Quarter of a half barrel full. Just finish frying up some and gorging myself.

Sleepy now.

Hmmn, A surf setup for bait with an 8000 would probably be 30-50 lb braid, and a 10-12 ft medium heavy action. Big water ugly stiks are really great bang for buck for soaking bait. 8000 @ 30 oz would be too heavy to use plugging all day unless you don't like your shoulder lol.

Trolling with a spinner would be best on some sort of jig stick, action depending on the speed and lures. 5-7 ft length. Deep divers could utilize a heavy, fast action jig rod like a carnage. Slow trolling baits for kings could use softer actions found on the trevalas and tiger lites. I wouldn't pull spoons on a spinner, unless its a very small planer at moderate speeds. The battle has enough drag to deal with that. 30 - 65lb braid, 40 lb topshot.
If you serious about trolling, a dedicated lever drag is the way to go, doesn't have to be expensive either. Shimano TLD's are jack of all trades.

Thanks for the info... very informative ....
but was looking for one rod to do both types of fishing... if possible ??????????

I've done shore fishing with a one piece 6ft ugly ( http://www.tackledirect.com/shakespeare ... emDataTabs) to land rays, snappers but around inlets, bays, rocks, won't get much distance if surf fishing unless its for whiting which are within the wash.
I would give an all round rod to the tiger lite jig sticks for casting poppers from boats, jigs , bottomfishing, light trolling and throwing weight and bait if the fish aren't too far from shore maybe 50, 60ft. Decide on the length and power depending on what type of fishing you'll do more often.
I believe there's 2 spinning models, a 6'6 heavy and 6' xh, the xh would be better for trolling and applications like throwing big mullet for tarpon around estuaries and pilings where there's mangrove and concrete structure.
