Local Aerial Drone ~ Manzanilla

Sargassum Inundates the Beaches of the Caribbean

Massive amounts of pelagic sargassum have ben washing up on Carribean beaches for the past few months.

According to Mission Blue friend Martha Gilkes of Antigua, the seaweed drifts are getting as high as 3 to 4 feet on some beaches.

Unfortunately for local human populations, the sargassum is smelly and choking some of the ecotourism to the area.

Tragically for baby sea turtle hatchlings, their journey into the open sea is being hampered by the collected sargassum and some are not making it.

Heroic environmentalists like Mrs. Gilkes have taken the opportunity to comb the beaches in the morning and help rescue these helpless baby turtles

Love that tribute to Allyson.

She should have gotten some kind of national recognition, for her years of local entertainment/journalistic contribution... not to mention the Judy Alcantaras, Holly Betaudiers, etc.

Local Leatherback Turtle ~ Christie

Christie’s tag stopped transmitting on Sat28thMar2015

The good news is Christie is alive and well - MonMay4th

The bad news, she doesn’t have the transmitter attached

And Christie looked good - The transmitter had clearly been knocked off likely during mating

This patch is one of the things the Beach Crews in Trinidad were looking for.

We have learned over the years, that when a transmitter comes off a turtle, the skin directly under it is light in colour.

Within a few weeks, the skin will darken again

Ideal Idea

The sargassum seaweed being deposited on beaches in Tobago and in eastern Trinidad creates an opportunity for enterprising people, village councils and other organisations to earn money by collecting and bagging dried seaweed for sale in garden shops.

Seaweed is ideal for making compost and works well as a fertiliser and soil conditioner.

I am also suggesting the Tobago House of Assembly and regional corporations in east Trinidad can collect the seaweed and deposit it in selected areas, far removed from residential zones, to decompose for a period of three to four months after which it may be used in Government plant nurseries, in the Botanical Gardens and for enrichment of soil used in roadside landscaping.

Seaweed and seaweed extracts for use in agriculture make for big business in many parts of the world. But here I am only suggesting the use of easily available sargassum seaweed as a fertiliser and soil conditioner and for the making of compost.

Local Street ~ Yellow Line

Cars parked too close to the corner also make it more dangerous for pedestrians to cross the street.

They diminish the line of sight between walkers and motorists. A person on foot must stick his torso out into the road from just past a parked car to check for oncoming traffic, and motorists have less time and space to respond to a pedestrian who steps out into the road unexpectedly.

If you drive in Trinidad, you know that some of the curbside no-parking markings can be … minimalist. Or, rather, completely indistinguishable.

Sometimes, the marking is an 18-inch white strip painted directly onto the sidewalk … and once the paint begins to fade, it can be seriously challenging to figure out whether the marking is truly paint, or if it’s instead an errant smear of bird poo.

I swear to you that this white paint on the curb in Woodbrook is supposed to tell you where to park.

In July 2013, the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure stepped up their efforts in response to a petition from the Downtown Owners and Merchants Association workers painted yellow lines on street corners to make it a little more apparent to drivers which spots would get them wrecked.

DOMA President Gregory Aboud said members of the business community, persons working in Port-of-Spain and members of the public patronising the city and restaurants and bars in Newtown, St Clair and Woodbrook were “deceived” by the absence of lines indicating parking distances from corners and “clearly enunciated signs indicating what parking rules existed on the streets of Port-of-Spain and environs.”

Cars have been wrecked from areas without white lines or signage indicating where to park. Aboud said, “based on the abuse which we have observed we came to the clear conclusion that the ambiguity which existed about where to park and where not to park was being exploited by the wreckers to the disadvantage of unsuspecting motorists.”

(PS: if there's a ched for this ,i didnt look or if not make a ched) :)

Local Coconuts ~ How to make Coconut Oil

7.27 mark

The dry coconut has to be burst open, the inside aka the meat of the coconut has to be removed.

The meat of the coconut is then blended with water.

Strain the grated coconut and the liquid is coconut milk.

Put this coconut milk to boil until the coconut oil separates from the cream.

This process takes about one hour.

Local Sweet Potato ~ Benefits

Sweet potato is a unique type of potato that comes in different colors and has numerous healthy benefits. The most common sweet potato is the one with yellow-orange or white-cream flesh. If you see somewhere purple-fleshed sweet potatoes, buy them immediately because they`re loaded with antioxidants

1.Perfect for Diabetics: Sweet potatoes contain natural sugars that help diabetic reduce and stabilize their insulin resistance and regular their blood sugar levels.

2.Digestion: Sweet potatoes are rich in dietary fibers which help prevent colon cancer and relieve constipation.

3.Prevents Emphysema: Smokers are deficient in vitamin A and get emphysema (damaging of the air sacs). Sweet potatoes contain carotenoids which the body uses to produce vitamin A and which help in the regeneration of the respiratory system.

4.Immune System: Sweet potatoes are rich in vitamin D which is important for the functioning of the thyroid gland, for the teeth, bones, heart, skin, and energy levels.

5.Healthy Heart: The potassium contained in the sweet potatoes negates the sodium impact and improves the heart function. It also regulates blood pressure and balances electrolytes. Sweet potatoes are also rich in vitamin B6 which can help to prevent strokes, degenerative diseases and heart attacks.

6.Healthy Muscles and Tissues: The potassium can help athletes fight the muscle cramps and to reduce swelling. It can also provide them with energy and relax their muscle contractions. Sweet potatoes can regulate nerve signals and heartbeats as well.

7.Anti-Oxidant: Beta-carotene protects against breast and lung cancers, helps with asthma, gout and arthritis, and reduces aging effects.

8.Fetal Development: Sweet potatoes are loaded with folic acid which is essential for a healthy fetal tissue and cell development during pregnancy.

9.Anti-Stress: The magnesium found in the sweet potatoes functions as anti-stress agent, while the potassium regulates the water balance of the body, normalizes heartbeats and increases oxygen flow.

10.Vitamin C: Sweet potatoes are loaded with vitamin C, which is an essential vitamin for the functioning of the entire body.

11.Anemia: The iron contained in sweet potatoes helps fighting anemia because it plays the most important role in the production of producing white and red blood cells.

12.Youthful Skin: Use the water left from your boiled sweet potatoes for your skin. It will cleanse your pores, absorb impurities and sooth irritated spots.
The Vitamin C helps the collagen production, while vitamin W improves the skin complexion. The anthocyanins can remove the wrinkles, the dark circles of your eyes and the puffiness of your eyes.

13.Premenstrual Symptoms: Manganese and iron contained in the sweet potatoes can treat many premenstrual symptoms.

14.Quality Hair: The beta-carotene helps hair growth and prevents hair damaging and the appearance of dandruff.

15.Minerals: The vital minerals such as potassium, manganese, calcium, magnesium and iron are essential for the carbohydrate, protein and enzyme metabolic processes.
