President of the Route 2 Maxi Taxi Association Linus Phillip has asked that commuters report drivers who insist on charging them $4 for short drops along Eastern Main Road, rather than the standard $3.
Misprinted tariffs, which erroneously put short drops at $4, were sent out to drivers before the error was discovered. And even though tarriffs with the corrected fare were issued to drivers, some are still displaying wrong tarrifs and are charging commuters accordingly.
Yesterday, one lunch-time commuter at City Gate, Port of Spain admitted that she paid $4 for a short drop on Monday even though she knew it was still $3. The driver, she said, told her the fare had gone up by $1.
“What can I do? Tell him that is not the price? And then what? Get put out of the maxi?” she asked.
“So I paid it.”
Another commuter only found out that the short drop fare was unchanged when the Express brought it to his attention.
“I just paid $4 from San Juan to here (City Gate). I really didn’t know that,” he said.
At City Gate yesterday, Delores Martin, a committee member of the Maxi-Taxi Association, informed commuters of the short drop fares, while she waited for her own passengers. Phillip said tarrifs dated January 5 are the ones that are free of the printer’s error and should be on display in all maxi-taxis.
The tariff carries the Route 2 Maxi-Taxi Association logo on the left side in red and has an Association stamp on the top right side.
