The town of Valencia once an estate owned by a Spanish planter called Valentia. There are two concrete pillars at the entrance to the town, built by the Americans in 1941, during World War 11. The pillars represented an entry point to their base at Cumuto.
On the western outskirts, the Ministry of Tourism constructed a Visitor’s Centre to develop ecotourism in the area. The Centre provides valuable information on Trinidad’s natural attractions, flora and fauna.
Valencia described as the land of many rivers have four rivers that flow through its boundaries. They are the North Oropouche River, the Turure River, the Quare River and the Sieva River.
The clean, fresh water that channels from remote tributaries of the Northern Range makes this area a favorite place for river limes.
The largest and most significant to the people of Valencia, Sangre Grande and environments is the North Oropouche.
There is a WASA Treatment plant located upstream that supplies water to these nearby villages.
The popular bathing spot at the Valencia Bridge also called Valencia River is the North Oropouche at its middle course. It source originates from the limestone territory of Aripo, and it submerges to resurface at the oilbird cave in Cumaca.
The calcium carbonate deposits along its bed filter the water to create crystal clear pools.
A short walk upstream, the river transforms itself into utopia and its true magnificence discovered. The scenery along its bank is breath-taking, and the splendor of nature is at its finest.
Upstream, the river widens, and the limestone rocks form magnificently shaped pools and Jacuzzis. Along its path, there are gorges, basins and waterfalls to swim.
The rocks molded with sandstone sediments are picturesque and offer a safe grip to walk. An interesting feature on the trail is the thousand of young mora trees, the seeds shaped like a large red bean falls from the trees during the month of November and by February the seeds germinate.
The route to discovering this secret paradise is an easy fifteen minutes walk through the private lands of the Bermuda Readymix Quarry.
The journey suitable for anyone who has a spirit of adventure and crossing requires one to get wet
