Miss Esther Pope. Scholarship winner from Laventille.

"If you must fly , fly high"
Wherever you are planted, you can bloom

Nineteen-year-old scholarship winner and Beetham Gardens resident Esther Pope is the subject of this week’s edition of “From Laventille With Love”, the 12th in a series highlighting positive groups, organisations and individuals from the stigmatised Laventille community.

Earlier this month, murder suspect and victim Dillon “Bandy” Skeete was eulo­gised in a most unusual way. “Circumstances made him what he was,” said his friend, Brent Muhammed.

But for Esther Pope, circumstances are no excuse. In her short life, Pope has already experienced what many people cannot even begin to imagine.

From constant gunfire in her neighbourhood to police kicking down her door and raiding her home, the soft-spoken St Francois Girls’ College graduate remained unfazed, focused on her dream of becoming a paediatrician.

Pope is one of six Additional scholarship winners at the school this year, receiving hers in the field of natural sciences.

She will begin her studies at The University of the West Indies School of Medicine next year, but her journey to success was not always an easy one.

With six siblings on her father’s side and three on her mother’s, resources were stretched thin. Pope was raised by her mother together with her maternal siblings in a two-bedroom home, while her father and other siblings lived elsewhere.

“Growing up was not a bed of roses for me.

We didn’t have a lot of money and things.

There were certain days we didn’t have enough money to go to school.

My parents would have to borrow money to send us to school.

Sometimes they didn’t have the money to buy all the books.”

While Pope acknowledged her father assisted financially, she said it was her mother who was the main provider.

“My father was responsible for provi­ding school money, but sometimes we wouldn’t know when he would come.”

Pope said initially she was ashamed to tell people where she lived.

Now, she is proud to represent her community.

“Over the years I’ve overcome that.

I’ve learned to be more proud of where I am from.

I see myself as somebody who could maybe inspire people from the area.

And people around here are my biggest supporters.

They encourage me and they are proud of me.”

Pope said when she found out she had been awarded a scholarship, she was not very surprised. While her friends were celebrating, she remained calm.

Her mother, on the other hand, had a different reaction.

“I called my mother on the phone. She started screaming.

It was a nice feeling to make my family proud.”

“I am very glad for her,” mother Diana Pope said. “She is the kind of child who, once she sets her mind to something, she doesn’t let anything stop her.

She never got into any trouble.

She was always focused on her books.

Esther is an example of what could happen when you give children a fair chance.”

Pope, who is the first in her family to have achieved this level of success, said several of her family members have been motivated by her achievements and have decided to enrol in classes.

The youngster’s wish is for the public to stop judging her community by the negatives alone.

“There are a lot of positives here, too.

Many people from here have become doctors and lawyers, and many are trying hard to pursue better.

Give us a chance,” she said. Pope, who works with the Loveuntil Foundation, says she has a passion for helping people.

“I remember growing up and seeing both my grandmothers suffering from dia­betes.
I remember feeling helpless and unable to help them.

I told my grandmother I was going to be a doctor when I grew up so I could help people.”

Her work at the foundation brought her into contact with children whom she helps with homework and other activities.

“So I grew to like children and working with children and that made me want to be a paediatrician.”

Pope credits God, her teachers at St Francois Girls’ College, her parents and supportive community for her success thus far.

And has these words for other young women in her community and those who believe nothing positive comes out of Beetham Gardens: “No matter your geographical area, you can excel.

Where ever you are planted, you can bloom.”

Local Frisbee ~ Trinidad Ultimate Frisbee Hat Tournament


A new and exciting sport has hit Trinidad & Tobago with fervent support from locals and residing Multinationals in the form of Ultimate Frisbee.

Played around the world, "Ultimate" as it's affectionately called is a Mashup between touch Rugby and Netball and is the only "Self Refereed" sport that we know of

It was cool to see a "foul" mediated by all the players on the field, with the end result being a "brush It off guys, let's get back to playing!"

Amazing camaraderie, a brilliant open air space in the form of the Queen's Park Savannah, music, food, coolers of drinks, kites, footballs and families all came together to make this hot Saturday event a fantastic one!

We came, We learned, We had fun and We may even throw a Frisbee Soon
