Get a NAS (network attached storage). These range from 2tb to 20tb. When you need more space you can just buy a bigger HDD and put it in. My environment is mostly Mac, so I use the LaCie Brand. but I heard the Synology brand is great NAS boxes too.

WD Cloud is probably the Bess way to go especially if your a noob setup is easy and its going cheap on eBay now. Also I don't think these things can be upgraded so buy as much possibly in storage needed
A nas maybe to much for help to set up! Maybe if you he wasn't a noobie I'd say raspberry or banana pi cost like 50Usd and what every size HDD he requires, I got one setup as a ftp.

I have a Synology NAS.
Works perfectly on my wired network which has 6 users. Has add on software packages (free) to be used as a cloud station I.e. your personal dropbox to be accessed anywhere or as a security camera station where it can record input from CCTV IP cameras.

Mirror function really depends on your preference. Do you need to have your data backed up twice? This will be an increase in cost for hard drive (s).

Just note that the Synology monitors the health of your hard drives and gives you a report. So there is opportunity to backup your data if the hard drive in the NAS is failing.

Yes should be able to do that if mounted as network drive so you just gotta chose the file location. As for mirror I never saw a need so, I go by the rule 'if I don't need I don't get it!'

Remember when buying choose an amount of storage beyond your needs just in case you full it all so 1.5tb - 2tb should do for the average user. And using the WD forums after buying the device should be best as there are a lot of experienced users on there...

Check out the same WD my cloud it suppose to have cross platform compatibility
But its really what application you want it for! A NAS is good but only for large storage and set up could be confusing to some

whats this 'mirror' version u guys talking about? u mean RAID?

that is a must have!!!.....hard drives were not made to last forever, especially if they are always running.

i feddup with people asking if they can recover files from a dead hard drive and at d end of the day they loose a lot of important stuff.

^^Yeah RAID1. Total truth, even the best hdd monitoring cannot always predict disk failure.

simplest (maybe cheapest) solution is a WiFi Router with a USB 3.0 port for attaching cascading USB hard drives. lol

I use LaCie brand for my Mac environment. It works seamlessly and is pretty easy to setup. Everything now is automatic. It's a set it and forget it appliance. There is also an app which you can use to access all your file in your mobile device remotely.

Check their website for more details.

There are many types of home NAS. The best I have used thus far is synology. Look it up.
You can even demo the user interface form their site.

Running since 2011 a 211j raid 1. Started with two 1TB and upgraded to two 2TB after the second original drive failed.
Couldn't get a 1TB locally to replace the drive so I upgraded.

Lots of apps, but the best is the bit torrent app. Just search, download and enjoy.
It was best for my movie collection/viewing before these online movie sites.

Nas. Only need raid if data is valuable. Avoid raid 0, 5 etc. Use raid 1. Avoid lacie. Avoid western digital. I like the nas with a torrent client. No need to leave pc on. Also like nas that is dlna. That way tv sees nas and plays media directly. Look for large frame or better support if plan to do heavy media streaming such as hd movies. Must have router with similar support. If buying empty nas look for hard drives that are either enterprise grade or built for nas. Check reviews on smallnetworkbuilder and storagereviews.com.
