Jamaat al Muslimeen leader - returns home

Leader of the Jamaat al Muslimeen, a Muslim group in Trinidad and Tobago, Yasin Abu Bakr, has returned home

Abu Bakr, who was denied entry to Jamaica on Wednesday, was escorted on a special flight accompanied by members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force early Thursday(October 16) and handed over to Trinidadian law enforcement personnel at Piarco International Airport.

Threat?

Meanwhile, Fuad Abu Bakr, the son of the Jamaat al Muslimeen leader, is rejecting claims by the Jamaican authorities that his father was a threat to national security.

Fuad Abu Bakr is questioning how his father, who he claims does not have a criminal conviction, could be a threat to national security in Jamaica.

He is also questioning whether his father's rejection is a regional immigration issue or the mischievous work of politicians in Trinidad and Tobago or Jamaica.

According to Fuad Abu Bakr, the family flew to Jamaica for a six-day visit to his sister who is studying medicine at the University of the West Indies, Mona campus.

He disclosed that his father was also invited to be a guest at the anniversary of the Million Man March to be held on Sunday in Kingston.

Fuad Abu Bakr says the family has been in contact with Trinidad and Tobago High Commissioner to Jamaica, Dr. Iva Camille Gloudon, who has been assisting with the situation.

If we could reject a Jamaican for the slight possibility they may take up the lucrative job of being a security guard, then Jamaica has the right to reject a Trini who is directly responsible for the death of 20+ ppl.

Who Paid J$4 Million For Private Jet To Deport T&T's Abu Bakr From Jamaica?

It appears that the Jamaican Government paid over US$36,000 (J$4.03 million) to hire a private jet to deport Muslimeen leader Yasin Abu Bakr to Trinidad and Tobago yesterday.

According to the Trinidad Express newspaper, quoting National Security Minister, Gary Griffith, Jamaica, through Trinidad and Tobago’s High Commissioner, Iva Gloudon, had asked him to foot the bill.

However, Griffith said he turned down the request.

"I was very clear that Trinidad and Tobago will not bear the costs of that private flight," Griffith said.

It now appears that the bill was paid by the Jamaican Government.

Meanwhile, Griffith said it was only at the time of the request that the Trinidad and Tobago authorities were knowing about the decision to deport Abu Bakr.

The minister also denied that his Ministry supplied any information to the Jamaican authorities.

In the meantime, he said he respected Jamaica's decision and had no intention of calling the move irresponsible or anti-CARICOM.

"You have to understand that national security trumps all," he said.

The Jamaican Government had cited national security as the reason for denying Abu Bakr landing rights.

Statement on Abu Bakr's deportation
By the Multimedia Editor
Story Created: Oct 16, 2014 at 2:36 PM ECT
Story Updated: Oct 16, 2014 at 2:36 PM ECT
On Wednesday 15th October 2014, Imam Yasin Abu Bakr, along with one of his wives and son boarded a flight from Trinidad and Tobago to Jamaica for a six-day visit to his daughter who is studying Medicine at Mona Campus.

The Imam, who will be turning 73 on Saturday, was also invited by the Honourable Minister Louis Farrakhan to be a guest at the 19th anniversary of the Million Man March will be commemorated in Kingston, Jamaica on Sunday 19th October 2014.

Upon arrival to the Norman Manley International Airport, the three were greeted by Jamaican Immigration Officials, who refused them leave to land in the country saying that they were all threats to Jamaica’s National Security.

After deliberations, the initial decision was reversed. The Imam’s wife and son were allowed entry into Jamaica, however the Imam was informed that he would be deported. The Imam refused to leave, stating that he wanted clear information on how he could be perceived as a threat to Jamaica.

He said as a Caricom citizen he was willing to be taken to court to assert his rights to freedom of movement in Jamaica and the Caribbean. He asked to be detained and taken to court to prove that he was not a threat to Jamaica’s National Security. He asked for proper proof or information to be presented.

“How could Imam Yasin Abu Bakr, a man who has travelled to over 60 countries in the world, a man who does not have a criminal conviction despite the political rhetoric, be a threat to national security in Jamaica? Who gave Jamaican authorities this information? Is this a regional immigration issue? Or is it the mischievous work of politicians in Trinidad and Tobago or Jamaica?” asked Fuad Abu Bakr.

Efforts by Dr. Iva Camille Gloudon, the Trinidad and Tobago High Commissioner to Jamaica and Minister Louis Farrakhan are ongoing. We thank them for all the efforts being made to assist.

The Imam boarded a private flight and returned to Trinidad just after 6 a.m. this morning. He is in good health and strong spirits and is resting comfortably at.

He is requesting the intervention of the relevant authorities in Trinidad and Tobago to clear up this matter.

Imam Yasin Abu Bakr said: "The statements and actions of politicians affect the citizens of their respective countries at home and abroad. These decisions were not made by immigration officials at the airport. They are in bad taste and it is unfortunate that I have been mixed into this mess at this point.

“It is embarrassingly incorrect to come to the conclusion in these circumstances that I would be a threat to Jamaica's National Security. I support freedom of movement in the region and employ a number of Jamaican nationals in Trinidad.

“My private school also caters to foreign nationals, a number of whom are Jamaican and find difficulty accessing education in the government run institutions. We will continue to make efforts to get to the bottom of this abuse and appropriate action will be taken in accordance.”

A press conference will be held at the Jamaat Al Muslimeen Headquarters, #1 Mucurapo Road St. James, Trinidad and Tobago at 2pm, Friday 17th October 2014. All members of the media are invited.

Griffith: We look after all our citizens
By \\\\\ Ria Taitt Political Editor
Story Created: Oct 16, 2014 at 9:24 PM ECT

The Jamaican Government paid over $230,000 to hire a private jet to send Muslimeen leader Yasin Abu Bakr back to Trinidad and Tobago yesterday, after the Trinidad and Tobago Government denied the request to pay the fees to hire the aircraft to transport Abu Bakr home.

This was revealed by National Security Minister Gary Griffith at yesterday’s post-Cabinet news conference. The Jamaican request was made through Trinidad and Tobago’s High Commissioner Iva Gloudon. And Griffith said it was the first time the Trinidad and Tobago authorities knew about the decision to deport Abu Bakr.

Asked whether he was expecting to receive an invoice from the Jamaican Government, Griffith said: “No, I was very clear that Trinidad and Tobago will not bear the costs of that private flight.” He said the cost of it was US$36,000.

Griffith stressed the Trinidad and Tobago Government had no involvement in the decision taken by the Jamaican authorities with respect to the deportation of Bakr. He denied that his Ministry supplied any information to the Jamaican authorities.

Griffith said he respected the decision of Jamaica and had no intention of “jumping on a bandwagon” and saying “that waters are being muddied or that persons need to shut up or that it is being irresponsible or affecting Caricom. You have to understand that national security trumps all”, he said. The Jamaican Government and Opposition had told Griffith not to “muddy the integration waters” and had suggested he refrain from making “disrespectful comments”, in the wake of the deportation of 13 Jamaicans within the last two weeks.

Griffith said the exact laws used in Trinidad and Tobago by the immigration officers to deny persons entry, if they are deemed as undesirables or a liability to the public purse, was the precise law used by the Jamaican immigration officials to deport Abu Bakr.

“But we were criticised for using that law (by the Jamaican Government and Opposition),” he said. “It is ironic that the Jamaican authorities have done the exact thing we have done and it should not be questioned in any way,” he said. Griffith said these were instances in which the immigration officials were just doing their job. Griffith said while he would not question the decision of Jamaica, it was most unfortunate that the inference was being made by some in this country that the Trinidad and Tobago Government had something to do with Bakr’s deportation. “We have to look after the well-being of all citizens of Trinidad and Tobago even whilst they are abroad.”

Jamaican Gov’t admits to paying US$36,000‏ for private plane to send barred T&T Muslim leader home

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaican Government has confirmed that it paid US$36,000 for a private plane to take leader of the Jamaat al Muslimeen in Trinidad and Tobago Yasin Abu Bakr back to the twin-island republic Thursday morning.
Abu Bakr was initially placed on a Caribbean Airlines flight on Wednesday afternoon for return to Trinidad, but according to a statement from the Ministry of National Security a short while ago, he became unruly and refused to take instructions.
He was subsequently removed from the flight.
The Jamaican Government says preliminary discussions were held with the Trinidad and Tobago High Commissioner to Jamaica, Rev Dr Iva Gloudon, regarding Abu Bakr’s return.
However, under the circumstances, it is the country (in this case Jamaica) which refuses to land a passenger that is required to pay for the return flight, the statement said.
