Champions LeagueUefa are to change the seeding arrangements for next year’s Champions League group stages. The confederation confirmed today that the champions of the top seven European leagues, plus either Champions League title-holders will be the top seeds in each group. The current arrangement is for the eight highest-ranked teams under Uefa’s coefficient to be awarded the top seedings.
According to Uefa’s current rankings the order the top seven leagues in Europe is: Spain, England, Germany, Italy, Portugal, France and Russia.
Uefa had come under increasing pressure to amend the seeding system particularly after the draw for this season’s Champions League looked, in some respects, very much like last season’s. Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City were all drawn against sides they played in last season’s competition.
The news may adversely affect Arsenal more than most clubs. The Gunners usually make the top seeding and assuming they qualify for the 2015-16 competition they will only achieve that if they win either the Premier League or the Champions League.
