With almost (6) decades of musical history and pedigree behind him, Roy Cape, at 72, is about to venture into a new threshold of his life. The venerable and wizened musician will launch his first publication titled Roy Cape: A Life on The Calypso and Soca Bandstand on Friday, at Carib Woodbrook Playboyz panyard, Tragarete Road, Newtown.

The leader/musical director of the Kaiso All Stars, Roy Cape has done it all in music: an accomplished saxophonist; arranger; composer and recording artiste, and he’s also the 2004 recipient of a Humming Bird (Gold) national award, “for loyal and devoted service to the nation” and, in 2011, an honorary doctorate from UWI was conferred on him.

Island Hikers Presents ~ Tobago Weekend ~ Friday 26th Sept, 2014 – Sunday 28th Sept, 2014…..Tobago Exploration

On Friday 26th Sept, 2014 to Sunday 28th Sept, 2014, Island Hikers will be discovering the hidden treasures of Tobago.

Over the years, the Island of Tobago changed hands 33 times between the Dutch, French, Spanish and English before it was finally handed over to the British by the Treaty of Paris in 1814. The island had 10,000 slaves who worked on the 106 estates cultivating sugarcane, tobacco, cocoa and cotton. In 1889 with the decline of Sugar, the British made Tobago a ward of Trinidad. Many of the estate trails situated in the mountainous regions still exist providing considerable opportunities for exploration. Tobago has more than 230 species of birds of which 25 are known only to the island.

Big Bay and Little Bay…. Friday 26th September

On the North Side of Tobago situated between Culloden and Kings Peter Bay, there are two secluded beaches known as Big Bay and Little Bay.These beautiful beaches have always been a favorite among explorers. The mountainous terrain makes building roads difficult and access to get there is by boat or trekking over the mountains. Big Bay 2 km long is sandy with crystal clear waters and the walk from Culloden will take 90 minutes. The trail situated at the top of the coast passes through abandon estate land and then descends steeply into the bay. Along the way, the trail passes another picturesque beach known as Little Bay, and a short diversion will lead to a stony shoreline referred to as Washer-women’s Bay.

Assembly noon at Fort James Plymouth….Friday 26th Sept’14

(Parlatuvier Falls) & (Twin River Falls in Goldsborough)… Sat 27th Sept’14

In the scenic village of Parlatuvier, there are two Rivers called the East and West River. The hike starts by the Bus Stop and a 45 min walk up the rivers there are two beautiful cascades to discover.

On the other side of the Island another splendid waterfall is the Twin River Falls, located at the confluence of the Goldsborough and Great River. At the base of the falls, there is a large plunge pool for swimming and at the top of the watercourse there are secret pools to discover.
Image

Assembly 7.30 am at Esplanade, Scarborough … Sat 27th Sept’14

Saturday Night Island Cruise (optional $100.)

Assembly 8pm at Pigeon Point Road

No-Man’s Land…Sun 28th Sep’14

No-Man’s Land is a breath-taking peninsula situated in the Bon Accord Lagoon fringed by mangrove, coconut trees and swamp land. The calm, soothing waters and magnificent scenery of the lagoon makes it a must see place for any Trinbagonian. The beach is a popular spot for barbecues and access to get there is mainly by boat.

Assembly 7.30am at Milford & Shirvan Road. For more information contact Mario749-2956 or www. islandhikers.com

Total cost for weekend hikes $150.00 does not include transport.call to book

Terry Seales returns

Since the days of the Boys II Men-styled local R&B group New Creation, Terry Seales has been thrilling audiences with his vocal talents. As the St Ann’s-based singer matured and began to explore the soca genre and industry, Seales also added some dancing and a whole lot of humour to his performance repertoire, thus making himself a very likeable entertainer — whether or not his songs found favour with the radio stations

I also have two Chutney songs in the works and I’ll be collaborating with Soca Elvis. I’m recording my first soca-parang soon as well and I have some other songs I’m planning to enter the Young Kings competition with for the first time next year as well.”

Tonight, Friday 26th September 2014, Seales will perform at the Rising Star Restaurant and Lounge in San Fernando, as he helps to launch the “Not My Business” Riddim as produced by SNF and Val Musik Productions. Seales’ song on the riddim is called “Don’t Know Better” and will be the first of several planned releases leading up to Carnival 2015.

Tonight’s show begins at 9 pm.

This Weekend, 28th September 2014 at the Palladium ~ And Continues into San Fernando on the 1st October 2014

The first 40th anniversary showing of the highly and internationally acclaimed, locally made film Bim with the hypnotic Andre Tanker soundtrack

Raoul Pantin, screenwriter for Bim:

"I started my career in journalism in 1962, the year of Independence. I loved the fact that freedom of speech and democracy meant we could question anyone, report anything and that people could know the truth of what was happening in the country through the news.

The 1970 Black Power Movement started when this nation not even ten years post-Independence became disillusioned that opportunities were not available to those of colour. I subsequently wrote a book “Black Power Day” based on my experience of that time. 20 years later, I had a gun to my head for 6 days at TTT in the 1990 Coup attempt. I wrote another book, "Days of Wrath", based on my experience as a hostage.

Terrorism is the anti-thesis of democracy; that 1990 experience had a very profound impact on me. I suffered from PTSD. I became an alcoholic; my marriage broke up, I couldn’t function in an office. I started freelancing, which I continue to do today. I gave up drinking in 2005 when I realised the damage it was doing to my life.

I live simply- I’m still traumatised in many ways but I love this country. I consider myself a very unusual Trinidadian- listening to our national anthem still brings tears to my eyes."

American Stores ~ The History

In 1950, the late Sheik Sajard Hosein and his wife, Dora Hosein opened the first branch of American Stores downstairs their Abercromby Street home. Officers from the American naval base in Trinidad, who were returning home, had no use for their furniture so the couple purchased and refurbished the furniture to resell.

Sheik Hosein had a knack for fixing up furniture – if it was broke he’d fix it. The investment paid off and within days of starting their business, the couple tasted success. The name – American Stores – was chosen because the furniture originally came from Americans.

The store thrived in the 1950s, largely due to the constant support of consumers in Trinidad and Tobago, who were looking for something different on the market. When Sheik Hosein opened his line factory at Arima it was the largest of its kind in the Caribbean.

Hosein was an enterprising businessman who spent those early years studying the market to produce products that consumers were after. His motto was: “Work hard and success will follow.” And he led by example, often getting to work at the break of dawn to greet staff when they arrived at work. He was also very determined to succeed and year after year, he invested in building a reputable business.

After the first store, he opened several more, beginning with one on Queen Street which has since closed down. American Stores on Prince Street followed and the expansion continued as several other branches opened across Trinidad and Tobago.

Today, American Stores has 30 branches across the twin islands and two stores in Guyana. Currently, there are branches in Port-of-Spain, St James, Arima, Mt Hope, Chaguanas, San Fernando, Sangre Grande, Couva, Point Fortin and Tobago.

Since the first store the business has been successfully managed by Hosein’s family. It has been 64 years since Hosein opened at Ambercromy Street and today, his grandson Amir Maybodi is currently serving as managing director. Hosein’s granddaughter, Tana Defreitas, is also on staff as the chief operations officer and her aunt, Nadia Hosein has been serving as financial director.

“This is a family business and we have been working hard to keep his legacy alive and to keep American Stores open. There are challenges, as with any business, but we have a great team working with us and we are moving forward with our plans to expand and to maintain the quality for which we are known,” Defreitas said.

Defreitas now sits in an office her grandfather once used and for her it is a “motivating space to be in”. Her grandfather worked up until the week before he passed away in 2000.

She recognises the responsibility placed on her shoulders and has taken a very hands-on approach to the work. In her current role, she travels overseas sourcing new products and interacting with new partners. American Stores has a number of loyal customers and employees, Defreitas noted, and this has helped to keep the business strong.

“We have several generations who shop with us…from grandparents to their grandkids and this really is what we want to keep going. By offering great service and quality products we hope customers will come back”.

The goal, she added, is to complete the final leg of work to open two more stores in Guyana next month, and they are also looking to tap into other regional markets

Local Rare Fruit ~ Mango-Steen ~ Anti Cancer Effects

The Mangosteen was introduced into Trinidad from the Royal Botanic Garden at Kew, England, between 1850 and 1860 and the first fruit was borne in 1875

Grows 20 to 80 feet tall. Its bark is a dark brown (nearly black) color. Takes two or more years for the tree to reach 12" in height. The first fruit harvest may take place 7-9 years after planting, but most take place in the first 10-20

Care should be taken when eating a fresh mangosteen. The outer rind is quite hard and leathery, and the deep purple-red juice of the rind stains nearly anything it comes into contact with.

Traditionally, the shell of the mangosteen should be broken by hand, not cut with a knife. As the rind begins to crack, the delicious inner fruit segments may be peeled away.

To enjoy mangosteen to its fullest, one should avoid the hard, leathery outer shell by pulling the segments out before eating, as the sap from the shell is quite bitter and unpleasant
.

Fresh Mangosteen can be found in countries like , Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and scattered around the Caribbean
