Washtub - Concrete or Plastic?

Tuners....Looking for a washtub.....washsink for washing clothes...
Many places have the plastic ones....
But I know the traditionally is the concrete one.....

Which is better from your experience?...
What are the pros and cons of either?.

Concrete one heavy, prone to mossing.

But very reliable and will last you a thousand years.

i never had a plastic one so i cant advise you on it.

The plastic one do not make the right sound when scrubbing my jockeys...it almost a hollow sound rather than abrading sound that is sometime needed and you get from the concrete.

Saying that, I doubt the concrete sinks made today are near as strong/dense as the ones that wasr bought 20 years ago and some of us still have. What about a wooden one? in the weslands of Trinidad they are used as decorations but they are very effective and an everyday tool for some. Always take into consideration the mobility too.

Finally expect a visit from Pioneer as he will induct you into the Sufferers hall of shame as a result of this, but at least you will have clean underpants for the occasion.

i know u can get them in either single or double.

have u tried calling some of the major hardware stores? Bhagwansingh's etc...

never had much experience with the plastic ones but i would suggest the concrete one.

keep in mind that u have to build a proper stand / base to install the concrete one......and it heavy as hell. lol

why ?....everyone has these ....I have my washer and dryer but just want one to use on occasions to wash out beach clothes or shoes etc etc.....

yeah stev am calling around.....but so far...plastic one more expensive that concrete...

- easier to clean
- easier to move/change if you decide to give a lil redesign
- moss won't grow on it
- prettier

concrete eventually cracks when the brc inside starts to rust and expand.
will last a while though

When I was small, dad bought a pair of plastic sinks to put up in the wash area in the back.i went inside one of them jumping, and it broke....got plenty buff and licks too. So because of that, i wud say go with the concrete, just ensure whoever is putting up the concrete do a good job with the stand. You don't want any catastrophe happening with the sink falling and damaging anyone in your house.

In dis day n age ppl dus stil use washtub to scrud clothes n kill out fabric. Op i have a plastic one to replace my concrete 1 after umpteen yrs. It works well for light scrubbing or soaking and well my machine does the rest. Cyar go wrong and worry about concrete mossing, falling on ppl etc

A few weeks ago, I bought a single sink (concrete) for $180.00

double is 350$

bought and installed one, made a stand ect. Would advise you however to properly make a stand, either with concrete or with angle iron,
also use the proper fittings, i made a mistake and use some fittings from a kitchen sink, i replaced them with plastic fittings , that installs into the tub.

i also used some JB water weld to seal the job.
Concrete ftw.
Iv yet to see a sink break due to rust.

The stains of the plastic sinks can almost never come out completely creating a worn out and nasty appearance.
You can wash the nastiest of mops and mats in a concrete sink with the harshest of chemicals and the sink will look the same way as when you bought it - try that with the plastics... You might throw it out after the first use when u see those stains, worst yet those white plastic ones..

I was wondering why many were saying that the concrete gathers moss etc as a downside of the concrete sink...
Doesn't ALL Materials gather moss etc?
Put sinks of both materials under the same rainy conditions and see what happens - even tiles and granite will gather it.
You can't expect something to be taking weather and not get moss/dirt etc.
Normal maintenance is expected.

Concrete sinks are best installed on concrete blocks with some cement etc - I use some 'L' brackets on the side, attached to the wall, to make sure they don't budge under intense pressure.

If its for an internal laundry,the 'plastic' tub is most appropriate.
The concrete tub is not affected by such things as UV and all things that take place outside in the weather.
Décor-wise the resin based tubs provide for a cleaned fit and more undersink space since they come with appropriate legs and can easily take attractive faucets.I have had units in service since 1998.
Last but by no means least a concrete tub can do serious damage and have accounted for many injuries.Remember even if 'properly' installed on concrete pedestals after time the concrete joint can shear and a full tub with a little extra load exerted to the front can tilt over.
Be wise and not necessarily nostalgic in your selection.

The real thing for an indoor laundry room is a stainless steel utility sink.



Advance in Aranguez on the highway has them. That plus a pre-rinse spray faucet.

Concrete sink installed a long time ago , small pool for babies and daily washing . No machine is cleaning some cloths after they have been used . Its scrubbing on a "jucking" board that takes out that dirt , using much less water and a bit more elbow grease . Expansion of BRC ; not here after much longer than 20 years . The only issue that has occurred is that piece of one "tooth" has come off but that has been smoothed , so this is a none issue . That stainless steel sink Uncle Duane is a real eye catcher for an indoor wash area.

Install your concrete sink properly and enjoy your washing .
