There have been extensive negotiations between Chelsea and Atletico over the past two months, and naturally around the time of their Champions League semifinal meeting just a few weeks ago, when the principals of a deal were put in place that would satisfy his buyout clause of 32 million pounds.

Report: Alejandro Sabella steps down as manager of Argentina
Posted on Jul 29 via Gianluca Nesci
After guiding his team to the World Cup final but ultimately falling just short, Alejandro Sabella has decided to step down from his position as manager of Argentina.
According to Argentine media reports (via The Guardian), Sabella, whose side fell to Germany in injury time earlier this month in Brazil, told FA president Julio Grondona that he has decided to relinquish his role on the Albiceleste touchline.
There has been much speculation in the wake of Argentina's loss to Germany that the 59-year-old would take this course of action, with Sabella admitting after the match that he was unsure he would be able to continue in the role.
“You have to fill the energy tank which sometimes gets empty. I have to think if I’m in condition to give 100%,” Sabella said two weeks ago.
Sabella took control of the team in 2011.
Argentina are set to play their first post-World Cup friendly on September 3, and will presumably need to find a new bench boss before that time.
Early reports suggest that Colombia manager Jose Pekerman and former Barcelona boss Gerardo Martino are the front-runners for the job.

Dunga has indicated his intentions for Brazil’s new era with sweeping changes in his first squad after taking over as the head coach from Luiz Filipe Scolari.
The striker Fred, who scored only one goal in the World Cup, was among those left out as were the full-backs Marcelo and Dani Alves, for the friendlies against Colombia on 5 September in Miami and Ecuador on 9 September in New Jersey.
Neymar, Oscar and David Luiz all survived, while the newcomers include Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho, Atlético Madrid’s Miranda and the Brazilian league’s leading scorer Ricardo Goulart.
Players returning who were starters at the World Cup, including Hulk, Luiz Gustavo, Fernandinho and Maicon. The captain Thiago Silva was not called up because he is injured.
“History shows that you can’t start from scratch, it’s important to keep some of the previous structure in place,” Dunga said. “Slowly we will be giving opportunities to the younger players. It’s not because of one bad result that everything was wrong.”
Dunga said other World Cup players may be back in the future. “It’s important that all players know that this is just the beginning of our work,” the coach said. “It doesn’t mean that the players not in this list won’t have another chance with the national team. The doors will remain open to all Brazilian players.”
Dunga replaced Scolari after Brazil’s disappointing finish to the finals, a humiliating 7-1 semi-final defeat to Germany and a 3-0 loss to the Netherlands in the third-place match.
The match against Colombia is likely to pit Neymar against the Colombia defender Juan Camillo Zúñiga, who fractured the Brazilian star’s back in the World Cup quarterfinals, ending his tournament.
Brazil squad: Jefferson, Rafael Cabral; David Luiz, Marquinhos, Gil, Miranda, Maicon, Filipe Luís, Alex Sandro, Danilo; Luiz Gustavo, Elias, Fernandinho, Ramires, Everton Ribeiro, Oscar, Hulk, Willian, Coutinho; Ricardo Goulart, Neymar, Diego Tardelli.
