Its called Aiptasia its considered a pest in saltwater tanks.. you can use peppermint shrimp to get off them, they normally feed on those, also you can use Aiptasia-x to get rid of them.

how everybody so quiet?

a few times i tried to upload 10+ pics and it crashed, pics that i took of some tanks in bahamas
will try again soon

while i was out, i left everything for the tank automated
came back with an algae outbreak, green algae on the rocks

i suspect it was from over feeding with the automatic feeder and really nasty filter floss which i usually change ever 2 days and this time was 8 days
its now kinda on the decline, as i did water change and change filter

but i really really really hate testing for phosphate, calcium etc
what kits do you usually use?
i just ordered the hanna checkers, it looks like my kinda thing, mixed reviews on accuracy though, still better than not testing IMO

I use salifert test kits. I like them but after a while the process becomes very tedious. Let me know how the hannah checkers work out though was really looking to buy those when these kits I have now are finished.

I noticed my gsp and some zoas closed up for a couple days when I tested my alk was about 15
Some of the larger zoas actually started to spread more than when my alk is at 10 which I try to keep it.

I adjusted the dosing pumps to reduce the dosage slowly so by tomorrow my alk should be back to 10. Won't be seeing the tank until Saturday so wont be able to test.
Anyone ever had their alk too high or too low?

i have the salifert and api test kits

i gave up on testing more than a month now.. don't have the patience for it, unless i really need to

the hanna will give me an idea of the values and will be easy for more regular testing for me

all my corals are growing, didn't expect it to be that fast, some quickly covering the rocks
but the zoas i find are very slow, and appear to be pale or at least not as bright as they were

lighting is Actinic
upgrading to a radion next week

cool...

i finally have my algae under control
all almost gone
sand is clean and white, rocks are nice and clean
just a few patches but they are dieing out and hermits are eating it

not sure what contributed to it
i changed to a new chemipure elite and added chaeto in the sump and display
also added the vortech pump, tank doesn't have any dead spots in terms of flow

tomorrow i plan on installing the radion light
some reviews said that the red light contributes to algae, anyone had any experience with this?

these are some pics i took of some tanks recently

which is the better lighting for a tank...blue or white?

which is better or standard for tanks?

My tank is white right now. I have 3 white bulbs and 1 actinic currently

Is that suitable or should I go more bluish and have 2 white 2 actinic bulbs or even 3 actinic and 1 white?

50 / 50 is a good mix but it all depends on what color temp are the whites, what type of bulbs you are using and your color prefrence. Corals use the actinic light in the 430 to 450 nm spectrum for growth and whites are mostly there to balance it out for viewing.
Also a shift in the overall color temp of you tank can cause corals to change shades.

My GSP and one of my zoas have not opened in about 2 weeks. My alk did go high prior to them not opening so im guessing that caused it. However since then my parameters have been all good no nitrates. 0.2Phos my pH ranges from about 8.22 to 8.33 on a daily basis and since then my alk has been constant at 9 since.

I have some larger polyp zoas that seem healthy and are always opened.
My toadstool, mushrooms, gorgonian and my other corals are fine except for the gsp and that set zoas

Any suggestions as to what may be the cause?

Do you guys cover ur aquarium to prevent fish from jumping out? I use eggcrate but i find it reduces the light in my tank.

I don't use anything but I know a friend of mine uses a cloth and the material is almost identical to the netting in those small aquarium fish nets with the handle.
You could check around for it in fabric stores or art supply stores. He bought his in the states.

Well my tank has a lip about 6" above the water level plus there is are strips of glass just above the water going around the tank for support. So for a fish to jumo out my tank it'll be difficult but im not worried. For the past 3 years with my tank and the various fish I never had them jump
