Website Design Coursesreelancing

Postby LovinDiva » January 18th, 2014, 11:23 am

Hi All,

I'm looking to broaden my horizons, I am looking at doing a course in Website Design. Does anyone know where does courses that would enable me to know how to build websites and possibly start freelancing such skill?

If you can't even Google that kind of information, or call a few places in the phone book, maybe the Internet isn't for you.

or maybe I did Google & called around to BorderCom, SBCS, CTS and other places and was looking for someone to recommend which is better. Either way the manner in which you responded was not necessary.

Are you interested in design or programming (or a bit of both)? Some knowledge of graphic design will be very helpful if you wish to start a freelance web-design career.

If you can do a basic graphic design course first then do the CIW Master Designer program at any of the places you listed, you'll have a great foundation.

The other option would be to skip the local schools and just do the courses online. There are a lot of sites with all the info you'll need:

No where did you write anything like that that, so how would someone be able to recommend one over the other?
Hmmmmmmm.... :?

First off you could call places like Proudfoot Communications and ask if they have any internships available. It's a good way to learn the business from an actual website design company standpoint. Which is invaluable as a freelancer.

Look at the bottom of most of the larger Trinidadian websites and you'll more often than not see the company that designed it so you can give them a call.

Another very practical approach is that you can download a trial version of Dreamweaver so you can get your feet wet and learn the basics in basic website design.

Better?

Much. But tell me, I was going to do a short course (12 weeks) in basic web design at cts. Would that help?

Depends on the cost. I would personally download the trial and get to grips with Dreamweaver for a few weeks yourself first and see how much you feel a 12 week course would help you afterwards. Chances are half the course you're paying for is showing you exactly what you would have learned in a week or two by yourself for free.

In this day and age the Internet is awash with tutorials. I would do a course if it was teaching something you specifically wanted to learn and couldn't very easily by other means.

And there are loads of companies that sell tutorials online such as Lynda.com and even from Adobe themselves.

In the visual arts (my field), a good show reel is worth a thousand resumes, whether it's the same in website design I don't know, so I couldn't say how much a diploma from CTS is worth compared to some examples of really nice website design you have in a portfolio to show clients.

In my experience web design is the same ... a good portfolio is far more important than any diploma/degree.

Whilst I agree, it's a bit of a catch 22.
not gonna get experience without valid qualifications.

CTS is good, but before you spend your money, recognize that education/development is an investment. Why not aim for actual webmaster certification, such as CIW or somehting?

Good luck
