TWO women, strangers up until yesterday, greeted and grieved together at the Forensic Science Centre in St James yesterday.

Sandra “Warrior Princess” Emmanuel and Joanna Sargeant talked to each other as they waited on the autopsy reports for their murdered son and husband.

Sargeant’s husband, 56-year-old Hughwill Sargeant, was gunned down at Bagatelle Road, San Juan around 6.45 p.m. on Monday.

Police reports indicated Sargeant, a driver with the Unemployment Relief Programme (URP), stopped to change a flat tyre when a lone gunman walked up to him and shot him several times about the body. The gunman ran off.

Sargeant was pronounced dead on arrival at the Port of Spain General Hospital.

Sargeant of Thompson Lane off Real Street, San Juan was the father of five.

His wife told the Express that her husband usually took that route.

She said her husband would help anyone and had just dropped off one of his children at a relative’s home and was on the way to pick up another when he was killed.

One of Sargeant’s five children, 16-year-old Rashida Sargeant told the Express that her father “had his ways” but he was always there for his family.

“I don’t know why people would do that, he is an old man,” his daughter said, adding that she would miss her father.

Later yesterday, she had to be consoled by a relative as she wept, saying that during the last conversation she had with her father, he promised he would be back soon.

Sargeant’s autopsy report said he was shot in the arm, face and neck.

In the other incident, Emmanuel’s son Maurice “Mo Mo” Emmanuel of Boxhill Trace, Laventille was shot dead about two hours after Sargeant was killed.

Emmanuel said she would resort to necromancy (communicating with the dead) to deal with her son’s killers.

The 27-year-old mason was found dead in a track at Sapodilla Trace, Brownville, Laventille after residents reportedly heard several loud explosions.

Emmanuel claimed her son was killed on the instructions of a man he once sold marijuana for. Emmanuel said the man was currently in prison on murder charges and believed her son told the police where five of his guns were hidden.

Emmanuel said of her son’s killers: “Machine gun was not made for Maurice alone. Bullets were not made for Maurice alone.”

Emmanuel said her son’s killers were known to him. She said her son went to the area where he was murdered with two men in a bid to prove to the locked-up drug dealer that he was not the one who informed the police.

She said her son was shot at earlier in the day and survived only to be killed that afternoon.

Emmanuel said her son was promised by the jailed man that he would be given a “machine gun” for protection.

The killings have pushed the murder toll for the year so far to 259.
