Does OSHA TT require Fire Extinguisher in Heavy Equipment?

Postby Groovemaster » May 9th, 2013, 9:34 pm

Just curious if OSHA TT requires a fire extinguisher in every piece of heavy equipment on a construction site or can it be within a certain range....eg 50 feet away?

where any piece of heavy equipment is in operation on a construction site, fire extinguishers must be on hand.varying types would depend on your surroundings.Just analyse what you all working with and have the necessary extinguisher on hand.

The OSH Act of TT does not require that fire extinguishers be placed on heavy equiptment however think of foreseable risk of harm. How how often does equptment catch fire? and whats the cost of a Back hoe or CAT?

A 10 lbs ABC can save the piece of equiptment once the fire is in the incipitent stages. Make sure you train employees in how to use the extinguisher and conduct a once monthly inspection.

I have to agree with Link - the requests from some of the OSH Inspectors is VERY questionable for the implementation of some corrective measures. Unfortunate that they DO NOT have much experience and exposure to the Industry to help make informed decisions, my advice to you is take the proactive approach to safe guard yourself and equipment from any dangerous occurrences that could happen. 8-)

The "Inspectorate" has had years of experience, most of the Senior Inspectors have been with the company since the 70's so how dare you?

It seems as though you want to practice unsafe working conditions and was written up for it.

That's good and fine with the Senior Inspectors but the Junior ones lack the experience and exposure and trust me I know where I'm coming from. Who mentioned anything about practicing unsafe working conditions - I say to you - How dare you?

MOST heavy equipment from cat of recent age I've noticed came with extinguishers in the cabin or right behind it.

i have equipment in National Quarries u need to have at least 1 extinguisher in each equipment ( truck , excavator , loader etc ) reason being if your equipment catches a fire on site your operator is able to handle the fire ...if hes trained to do so .. out on the field if a fire starts depending how long you take to get a extinguisher to your machine / equipment you will have a greater lost if the equipment doesn't have extinguishers ..... so besides the OSHA act u still should put 1 in .....

its advised to have 2 extinguishers 1 small in cabin and 1 large out of the cabin in a safe spot in CAT 320 excavators and up / cat 920 and up loaders reason being if the fire starts in cabin , the operator will panic an jump out of the cabin B4 grabbing the fire extinguisher .....

Osh act of trinidad is a combination of both. What should be followed is the company's guidelines since the act is the MINIMUM guidelines...most companies write their procedures and regulations above these guidelines
