*** THE OFFICIAL HOME THEATER & AUDIO THREAD**

Postby mojosodope » January 28th, 2013, 6:38 am

I'm not sure if this falls under this thread but I'm starting to research home automation system for a residence, anyone have any suggestions on which companies/systems I should check out?

Home theatre, sound throughout the house, indoor and outdoor, lighting inside and landscape, security, cameras, curtains etc. The person'a house hasn't been built yet so they want to know all the have to do during construction.

ideally something like www.control4.com will work excellent if you are now building
it's not cheap though

For a cheaper solution I used "macros" on the Logitech universal remote to automate my home theater using RF and infrared. I put macros in inverted commas since the Logitech harmony 900 doesnt really do macros but you can setup a list of actions it will carry out for each activity.

Pressing "Watch movie" on the Harmony 900 will turn on the TV and set the input, dim the lights, turn on the PS3, put the receiver in the right input and volume, turn on the a/c and set it to 22 degrees with low fan and close down the blinds.

Nice control4 is something I would be interested in, I've been using a harmony one for a couple years now and I don't know what I'd do without it, like you said it's great for smaller setups but I'm looking for a more all in one house wide system, I've seen control4 systems in the past but haven't checked them out in a while. Ideally I'd like to put all the wiring in place first and then add on additional components as time goes on and I can afford it.

I've also been scouting out some "affordable" good quality receivers, and for $250, the features that model has is almost a steal.

I'd definitely say go for it.

Yup.

Especially with the networking feature.

Excellent substitute for a dedicated HTPC system.

THAT was one of the main reasons for getting. I found myself connecting the iPad to the amp to get internet radio. But for 750 from Raptor, it's a steal. Full youtube concerts, itunes, and radio. in a teeeny tiny box.

AND will try mirroring with skype soon on the iPad, no need to connect computer any more.

I saw the Linksys AC 1750 in Circuit Zone in pos this week.. Should be the last of the "good" routers to come out of Linksys as they were acquired by Belkin two weeks ago..

Anyone have the latest version of XBMC up and running? I want to upgrade my HTPC (Acer Revo 3610, Win7). Hoping for a smooth transition.

Finding a router locally usually means some weird brand. If you had the time I would recommend a Buffalo n300 WZR w/ Tomato firmware.
