Well I don't know about the gearing.. but car 1 and 3 had loose objects in the car which definitely distracted driver 1. Also, Driver 1 kept one hand on the shifter for the whole run. IMHO that takes away from the control. Better to have two hands on the wheel only hold the shifter to change gears than to drive like that.
