I was genuinely hoping it wouldn't be just a branded HDMI cable. WOW.

^ I think your should upgrade to take advantage of the HD audio capabilities of your PS3 and AppleTV.
Also allow your receiver to control your TV.

HDMI will allow your receiver to decode and play Dolby TrueHD and dtsHD Master Audio

The new 2012 Yamaha RX-V473 is a great receiver. Check out their site, you can go higher up or lower down the RX range depending on your budget and needs

I would say, it depends. The phase tech sub should be plenty. The benefit would be a better reduction of standing waves, and to be very honest, although sub placement is theoretically non directional, the audtory and physical cues coming from a dedicated sub channel close to the main channel does make a difference. If your floorstanders are fairly full range this is less of an issue.

depends on size of room and acoustics.....sometimes two subs work better, sometimes not...once the entire system is balanced

yes it will sound considerably better

optical and coaxial cannot handle the bandwidth needed to play HD audio such as Dolby TrueHD and dtsHD Master Audio which are the audio formats on almost all bluray movies.

HDMI was made to handle those audio formats.

when you get an HDMI receiver you should plug your PS3 and your AppleTV to your receiver using one HDMI cable each. Then you plug your TV into the receiver using one HDMI cable.
Nothing should go from the AppleTV or the PS3 to the TV directly.
This way the receiver will handle the HD audio and HD video coming from your source devices and properly decode the audio and send it to the speakers and sync, pass-through or upscale the video to the TV.

you only need one HDMI connection per device when setting it up properly.

^ yup - more than likely the receiver's video upscaler will be better than the upscaler in your TV.

Get a good quality composite cable and connect the cable box to the receiver instead of connecting it to the TV

plus you get better sound for TV shows
works great for Nat Geo, BBC and Discovery!

I've never used the speakers on my TV

Hey guys, this has to be hands down one of the best threads i have stumbled upon on 2nr!!!!. Very informative and inspiring.

Now down to business :) :

I have a 32AV502R Toshiba, PS3, Tritton AX Pro Headset in a 12x7 room. I want to add some surround sound for an occasional Netflix HD 5.1 title and Fast Pass TV.

I do not intend of building my dream HT as yet but i am humbly asking for suggestions on a system/set up; HTIAB if possible that my current set up can take full advantage of.

Thanks

^i would suggest,as i usually do,get your stuff separate, even though i know you mention you intend to eventually build a proper HT setup, but for 3-4k honestly,if you get one of those HTIAB,and when your finally ready to build your dedicated system,9 outta 10 times, your not gonna be using anything from that same HTIAB you bought.Invest that 3-4k and get a decent receiver to start of with, then later on you can get a pair of decent speakers, and go from there.Regardless, getting a decent HTIAB for that price is cutting it close imho.

I dunno if duane would have any other suggestions.

^^^Yeah....u are right. besides the htiab's that i demo'd locally thus far are underwhelming. Was just making sure i didn't miss any decent ones, but i guess the tradeoffs are still too significant going that route. So many choices for receivers though....

The receiver is the heart of your HT system - read alot, compare more and choose wisely

Pioneer, Denon, Marantz, Yamaha, Onkyo are good brands to look at

Good advice there fellas, speedfreak99 keep ur eyes open in the classifieds for deals bro, i managed to get a mint used pioneer 820k receiver for $1500 and bought dayton bookshelf B652s by the pair via raptor for $350 as i could have afforded it and then a Dayton Sub-100 sub-woofer for $1500 also via raptor. A total of around 5k and a pretty decent HT.

guys hoping someone can point me in the right direction here

My onkyo receiver isnt playing on the centre, left surround and right surround channels.
All other channels are working fine.
When i checked the wires i noticed the wire for the right surround was shorted and i am guessing damaged something in the receiver.

Can this be fixed? if so who can i carry it to
appreciate any help

^so basically front left and right as well as subwoofer alone is playing? I would start with the basic's and make sure what i'm watching is in 5.1,i know someone who complained about this, and the dvd they were watching didnt support 5.1

I highly doubt you damaged anything in the receiver itself,as most of the newer model stuff come with failsafe's to automatically cut off,but i am interested in what you meant by "right surround shorted"

A model number of the receiver will also help diagnose your problem.
