Rodney King's videotaped beating by Los Angeles police officers in 1991 sparked some of the deadliest race riots in U.S. history.

Rodney King, the man whose videotaped beating by Los Angeles police officers in 1991 sparked some of the deadliest race riots in U.S. history, was found dead on Sunday, Rialto, Calif., police confirmed tro NBC News. He was 47.

King was found dead in a swimming pool and there were no signs of foul play, Rialto Police Capt. Randy Deanda told CNN.

King was beaten by Los Angeles Police Department officers on March 3, 1991. A bystander videotaped much of the incident from a distance.

Twenty years after Los Angeles police officers were acquitted of charges they brutally beat motorist Rodney King, TODAY's Lester Holt looks back at the case and how it changed the Los Angeles police department and how Americans view the justice system.

Violence broke out after a California jury acquitted three white and one Hispanic Los Angeles police officers in his beating of King, who was black.

The riots that erupted on April 29, 1992, were among the most lethal in U.S. history. By the time order was restored, 53 people had died, nearly 3,000 people were injured and thousands of businesses were damaged or destroyed.

In oen of the most searing images from the riots, a 33-year-old white construction worker named Reginald Denny was pulled from his vehicle and btean unconscious by four men at a Los Angeles intersection. Twenty years later, he has still not recovered from his injuries.

The violent reaction prompted King's famous response: "Can we all get along?"

Nearly a year later, a federal jury convicted two of the police officers of a federal charge of violating King’s civil rights and sentenced them to 30 months in prison. Two other officers were acquitted. King eventually received a $3.8 million settlement from the city, and the case led to sweeping changes in LAPD.

King had recently been promoting his just-published memoir, "The Riot Within: My Journey From Rebellion to Redemption."

dude wasted all that money and adopted a drug addict... last time i read bout him he could hardly afford his bills. Sorry to know that he passed on but this was a bought man, ethically he was just a normal person that got famous for getting lix but he also helped people come out of that racist way of thinking.

so today he was like a nobody but he did earn his place in history whether its by mistake or not

that's what you remember about Rodney King?
The man was the victim of a highly publicized racial attack, and his response was in impassioned plea for everyone to just get along......that's what he should be remembered for :|

Rodney King's beating was not a racial attack.
Had he complied with police officers after several pleas, it would not have happened.
It's the same sentiments expressed by you guys on here when a criminal is arrested locally for violent crime.
"Police should kill dem one time"....... "hope police did deal with him before dey take him een" etc.....

Rodney King was a known criminal also for violent crimes. As I said, police ordered him on several occasions and he did not comply. He attacked an officer first which led to the beating.

They should have shot him dead one time. Waste of time moddafacker.

P.S. I am black.

that may have more to do with the fact that Rodney has a genetic advantage with regards to licks vs the white man
