Apps for Apes - Apple

Apps for Apes will give orangutans at the Toronto Zoo iPads to play with

Apps for Apes, the brainchild of David Zimmerman and Orangutan Outreach, aims to give the primates a creative outlet to create art or music on, and maybe even to Skype with their relatives in zoos across North America

Apes at the Toronto Zoo could soon be playing Angry Birds with the rest of us. Apps for Apes, a program developed by the non-profit organization Orangutan Outreach, uses Apple’s iPad to stimulate creativity and alleviate boredom in primates.

Currently in the development stages at the Milwaukee Zoo, the program is being shopped around and has caught the eye of Zoo officials here in Toronto.

“We’re really trying to get in there,” said. Richard Zimmerman, executive director of Orangutan Outreach. “Toronto has a fantastic facility and we’re trying to get things moving. Our problem right now is donations. We’re bottle-necked at the moment and really need more iPads.”

Mr. Zimmerman says that the program is actively seeking the donation of gently used iPads from both the public and private sector. Anyone is encouraged to donate their old iPads, but there’s one company our there who can really make a difference.

“The mother of all support would be Apple itself,” Mr. Zimmerman said. “That would allow us to accelerate the program, get the iPads to zoos and really just grow the program.”

Orangutans at the Toronto Zoo may soon be monkeying around with Apple’s iconic iPad as a way to stimulate them and foster “primate play dates.”

Obsolete first generation iPads are perfect for the orangutans to practice with.

The concept of science is really lost on you two. Performing experiments like this can help us teach the children in Africa.

DTAC you really missed the point there buddy, Apple are donating the outdated iPads that are off the market to assist with the program - how does that affect the poverty and starvation problems in Africa?

I hate that I have to be reminded of starving kids in Africa every time something happens, I've been reminded of them during the Christmas holidays, during New Years holidays, when Steve Jobs died etc.
Everyone obviously knows about starving children all over the world, but if you expect to put production to a standstill to feed them all (which will probably die young from AIDS anyway) then you can have fun "Not living on this planet anymore"
