OP, simple things get you noticed
for example, most people list their duties form past jobs, rather than list accomplishments that are MEASURABLE
Fancy fonts irritate me on a cv, as do bubbly bullsheit cover letters that tell me you are hard working, brilliant, blah blah blah, with one setta big words.........you just telling me u are a bullshitter who just going to rattle off whatever you think I want to hear, in order to hire you

Heck I don't even look at cover letters most of the time, but if I do, and it irritates me, then I not even gonna bother with your resume

On a resume, if you not up with the times, you gonna get left back....stop putting age, marital status etc on the first page.....in principle, I don't really care, and in most instances, it's not PC for me to even ask those things........but if I think it's relevant, I will, but at least you should know that those things are not expected on a modern resume

and yes, the person opening your brown envelope might be a KANT such as myself, but a smart application will get you in the door at least

i have my cv/resume in a letterhead style with my personal info in the top-right corner & my name, & a passport size digital pic in the left corner, then my employment history listed in point form but enough detail, then qualifications, skills, achievements & interests. When some of ur references r former employers that's a major plus. There was this one job i wanted to land so I scanned some of my written references from former employers & pasted them in after my CV as extra pages lol & emailed it via their website ... got the interview but not the job.

Too much info, especially the pic which is not necessary (unless you're a hot chick).

Honestly, job seekers think that most companies even HR is dedicated to finding the right employee.

Not true, dont forget ppl have a tonne (private sector) of other responsibilities and no one is going to read your cover letter until right before you walk in the door to the interview. (still send one though!).

Your resume has to be tailored to the job you're seeking and that information MUST BE highlighted in bold in the first half of your resume. Everything else is just fluff.
