A MAN admitted yesterday to a magistrate that he used to visit a friend at his home.
After two years of visiting and drinking beers, he took his friend’s common-law wife away from him.
Naitram Haribance of Ben Lomond Village, Gasparillo complained in the San Fernando Magistrates’ court yesterday that the friend, 35-year-old Brian Boodram of Tarouba Village near San Fernando, became so enraged that he scraped Haribance’s car — a Honda Civic.
It allegedly happened outside the magistrates’ court on July 27, 2005, when Haribance and Sherida Dookeran, who was now Haribance’s wife, were inside the courthouse where Dookeran was filing a domestic violence case against her former friend, Boodram.
Dookeran had lived with Boodram for four years.
Yesterday, Haribance gave evidence in the case against Boodram who had pleaded not guilty to the charge of malicious damage to Haribance’s car. The trial is taking place before Magistrate Alicia Chanka.
Cross-examined yesterday by attorney Haresh Ramnath, who is representing Boodram, Haribance said that he used to visit his friend Boodram in Tarouba. “So he was your friend?” Ramnath asked Haribance, who answered, “Well yes, I used to go there and take a little beer. She (Sherida Dookeran) used to go with us and take a little beer.” Haribance agreed with the attorney that Dookeran has since converted to Islam, and is a muslim who no longer consumes alcohol. Dookeran and Boodram lived in a common-law relationship for four years, until Haribance came knocking at their door. Ramnath accused Haribance of being Boodram’s friend, but only as a ploy to take Dookeran away from him.
Haribance admitted that following his visits to the couple’s home he became friendly with Dookeran. She eventually left and went to live with him.
Yesterday, Haribance told Magistrate Chanka that on July 27, he went to court to meet Dookeran who filed a domestic violence case against Boodram. Boodram was outside the court as well, he claimed.
Haribance said, in answer to Ramnath, that he wanted to protect Dookeran from Boodram that. The attorney however put to Haribance that he had gone to court, just as he had visited Boodram’s home, because he was after Boodram’s wife.
Haribance said that when he emerged from the courthouse, he saw Boodram scraping his Honda car which was parked in front of the National Insurance Board offices. The case will continue on February 17.
