indeed teh PNM did a fuckload of B/S they lost, badly and with good reason but thats no longer the issue, in no way can wastage by the current administration can be justified by "PNM do it so can we !"

As said before its a great idea just implemented very stupidly...

If you have to do something, do it right. It's this attitude that forever keeps us in the mediocre....

We have the resources, we have the knowledge, we have the financial capability, we lack the attitude to do things right and work hard towards it

Indeed you're right...I don't negate that fact. I too am of the mentality that anything worth doing is worth doing right....and the it remains that Surish, Raj and Harrilal think they should go about it this and that way. But you're missing the big point: something is being done. What the PNM did is in the past and I see it as no justification for ANY political party to be spenthrifty as a result of mistakes made prior. However like health insurance in the US....this has been something the government has long ignored. Just like health insurance in the US....this could have been implemented a different way. BUT, as with health insurance in the United States, the government has at least addressed an issue that's been ignored for too long....it's not to say it's the be all end all...it's a start and given the integration they will see the problems and shortcomings of the system. As such I hope they make improvements in the years coming from that.

I respect the fact that they are being pioneers and trying something. Any person or body that tries to change an existing system comes under fire...people are afraid of failure, but unless you try you don't learn from the mistakes. They have my support for trying...even if it is a complete failure they are attempting to invest in the people, more specifically the future of our county.

well i respect that POV

maybe its just my way of doing things that i still hold to my opinion

give the laptops to university/tertiary level students INSTEAD?...they would certainly make more use of it...

i honestly find they should have been included

We have rescued our country from the Tyrannical PNM. Our education is now in the Good hand of Dr Tim Goopeesingh. Look at the recent SEA top students

This students have excelled academically and should therefore receive computers. I think that those students below 30% should not get any computers.
These students are our future Doctor, lawyers, and engineers. And future Presidents and Prime Ministers.

wait whut ?

wasn't the aim of this venture to help students ? or reward them ?

Every year we produce "future Doctor, lawyers, and engineers. And future Presidents and Prime Ministers." We've been dong that for the last 48 years, we've had greater years with regards to SEA results and the children have progressed with out free laptops, money would have been better spent of increasing computer lab space at Secondary schools and looking at having this programme for tertiary students instead

man i doh see what all dis fuss is, i is hardcore PNM and i sayin the govt should do this for years, yes computers and the internet have many negatives, but the positives out way the negatives by far, yes computer repair shops will witness a boom, yes some of them will misuse it or not gain any real benefit because of misuse, but we must think of those children who have no computer home, but they have the potential and the drive for greatness and dont study facebook 24/7

also you cya bowl out the bottom 30% because many who are not academically inclined can develop hobbies which can pay off and provide them with some form of income in he long run, so all those who against this project, its only 83 million, i wunda even be against it if it was 100million because thats like .3% of the govts anual revenue, its nothing substantial which can do wonders for development, wudnt mind if they came with govt sponsored 128k and all

Anything running WINDOWS is a waste of time.
HP, DELL, Compaq.. doesn't matter.

Arguing which PeeCee should have been chosen is like competing in the special olympics.

hadda agree with you there.

netbooks, with locked bios, no USB booting, and running a linux flavor without admin priveldges.
firefox, with simple media abilities, and document editing saving.

what IT support overhead needed there? compared to that quote.

hearign all this talk....what about the service centers for these laptops?....is it going to be like the MOWT car insepction system wheh yuh pay a money and get yuh sticker?

what determines the level of service that is required?

Are students going to get replacements while their machine is being fixed?

What systems are going to be put in place to corral the service centers (Assuming that they will not be Govt run but like a "SALRI" setup) so that wastage of ordring of replacement parts does not take place?

Who is going to control where someone slips in their non GOvt purchased machine into the system for service?

How are you going to determine "user errror" when the users are going to be primary school kids?

IS there going to be a remote monitoring and update system for software rollout? What are the privacy issues with remote access to school children laptops?

A child NOW get his/her laptop, and it slips out their hand and falls to the floor, cracking the LCD screen...what happens at that point? whats the process? Are the forms going to be online? Shoudl that child get a new unit due to the "user error"?

Use of machines in areas (rural) where there is no internet connectivity. Is the Govt going to set up mobile units t odeal with such?

Form 1-3 work doesn't even require the use of laptops/computers...
I would have understood if they were to be given to at least form 4 and up...(SBA's, IA's,etc)

This whole laptop thing is just phooey

So yuh mean for the same price of the feasibility study alone they coulda put maybe 500 new buses on the road? Allow an additional 500 persons to be employed as bus drivers?

I dunno but to me 150 buses from Grande into POS, maybe 200 from Sando to POS and the other 150 spread out in the more rural areas woulda had a much greater impact on traffic. Especially if they took a couple billion to build terminals with carparks people could park in and ride to their destinations.

horrible, horrible plan by the government. This system is going to be abused SO BAD EH. Our problem is the backwards mentality of the parents in this country. Children at the age of twelve SHOULD NOT HAVE INTERNET ACCESS. There are books that have all the relevant information they would need to do their assignment.

Most of these kids will not have proper supervision while using these machines as they would be allowed to take them off school grounds. Most parents and even kids will not see it as a big deal but using internet and not knowing the inherent dangers of the internet can cause serious damage.

It will also create space for abuse. Kids will now be studying each other business on facebook and making/watching porn rather than sitting behind a book and studying. There have been studies that show people who use facebook have 20% lower scores during exam time (DURR!!!). So hey, let's just give a bunch of 12 year olds some computers, they are obviously responsible enough to handle $3000+ pieces of equipment and are obviously all going straight home to loving, responsible parents who will keep the laptops in the family room while ensuring proper supervision.

I MEAN WHAT CAN POSSIBLY GO WRONG AMIRIGHT!!!
