its a all in one player, been using it since 2008. Decodes 1080/720p videos with audio great, its just like VLC,just alot more power hungry. It has different audio/video decoders you can manually select as well.

dont bother with vlc..total junk....try k lite mega codec pack.

it has ALL the codecs you will ever need for encoding / decoding video and audio.

it even includes the quicktime real video codec.

it allows you to play everything using windows media player 11 or you can use the WMP classic ( the one that came with windows 95)

just select all the codecs when youre installing it. problem solved.
after installing it run the reset to recommended setting tool....then reboot pc and you good to go.

Your tv would need to have the decoder for it play the file.
Most MKVs off the internet are encoded with MP3 audio or DTS for surround sound. DTS decoders are typically found in receivers not TVs.

Google tsMuxeR and use it to see what the MKV has in it. It'll be able to show you at the very least the audio and video streams in the file. Then compare it against the MKVs you are able play. You should be able to find the offending codec.
