Apple has reportedly stopped shipping the iPhone 3G 8GB units to AT&T stores, according to the BGR.

A move that is sure to surprise few, we suppose. We’ve heard that Apple has stopped shipping iPhone 3G 8GB units to AT&T stores and orders are not being placed for the device. Could this mean we might see the iPhone 3GS drop to $99 and make way for a new model? Or maybe the 3GS would disappear altogether? We’re not sure, but we’re about to find out…

A recent report by Morgan Stanley also expects Apple to drop the iPhone 3GS price to $99 once the next generation device is released.

Tenth worker at iPad factory commits suicide
By Clifford Coonan in Beijing
Wednesday, 26 May 2010

The Foxconn factory in the southern Chinese boom town of Shenzhen is so vast that walking around its outer perimeter takes two hours. Its workers turn out components that are supplied to big Western electronics brands including Nokia, Hewlett-Packard and Dell. And it is here that most of the parts for Apple's iPhone, and the much-awaited iPad, which goes on sale in the UK this week, are manufactured.

Yesterday, Li Hai, a 19-year-old employee of the firm, jumped from the top of the building in Shenzhen to his death. It brought the number of suspected suicides at the factory this year to 10. There have been another two attempted suicides.

All of the deaths have been of youngsters between 18 and 25 years old. Li Hai had only been working at the plant for 42 days. The incidents have prompted intense soul-searching in China, about conditions in its factories and the social cost of breakneck economic development.

Today Apple became worth more than Microsoft with a market capitalization 2.94 billion higher than its arch rival.

Apple closed the day with a market cap of 222.12 billion and Microsoft closed the day with 219.18 billion.

The only American company with a market cap greater than Apple’s is Exxon Mobil.

Apple has a backup design more similar to the iPhone 3GS in case of production problems with the new design leaked by Gizmodo, according to DigiTimes.

On a side note, Apple initiated the iPhone 4G project at the end of 2008. According to our sources, Apple actually has another product codenamed N91 for the project, which offers less change from previous iPhones compared with the N90. It's a parallel product to back up the N90 in case there are major delays due to significant modifications in casing, display resolution, digital camera support and so forth.

In regards to AMOLED touch panels, DigiTimes notes that Apple did speak with Samsung Mobile Display about the possibility; however, production capacity was a big issue.

SMD only has the capability to fulfill 50-60% of iPhone orders at the moment even it dedicated all AMOLED capacity to Apple. Of course, cost is always a concern. AMOLED panels cost US$34-38. TN panels cost less than US$10 and IPS panels around US$20.

Finally the report indicates that the Verizon compatible iPhone is still in early testing and won't be available for some time.

Pegatron will indeed assemble an iPhone, but the manufacturing cooperation is still at the EVT (engineer verification test) stage. There are two more stages - DVT (design verification test) and PVT (process verification test) - before mass production. Though there were reports that shipments for this particular device will begin in the second half, we believe 2011 is more likely.

The New York Times has published an interesting chart which shows how Microsoft and Apple have performed under different leadership.

Apple, the maker of iPods, iPhones and iPads, shot past Microsoft on May 26, 2010, supplanting the computer software giant as the world’s most valuable technology company. This changing of the guard caps one of the most stunning turnarounds in business history for Apple, which had been given up for dead only a decade earlier. The rapidly rising value attached to Apple by investors also heralds an important cultural shift: Consumer tastes have overtaken the needs of business as the leading force shaping technology.

Notice the decline of Microsoft from its peak in 2000 coincides with Bill Gates handing over the reins to Steve Ballmer...

MuscleNerd from the iPhone Dev-Team has announced that an unlock will be released for the 05.12.01 baseband from iPhone OS 3.1.3.

The information comes via a Twitter conversation with EmmanueGT...

@MuscleNerd will there be a unlock software coming out for the 3gs 3.1.3 baseband 05.12.01 when the new iPhone 4g comes out??

@EmmanueGT yep..so don't sell or give away your 3GS :) (at same time, remember not to accept Apple FW upgrades in future)

So to reiterate, don't jump to update when iPhone OS 4.0 comes out!

two things for you guys:

Skype 2.0 for iPhone Enables 3G Calling for a Fee!

Skype has finally released a version of their iPhone application that supports calling over 3G; however, the company plans to charge you a monthly fee on top of what you are paying for your data plan.

With Skype on your iPhone or iPod touch you can call and instant message anyone else on Skype for free. You can also call landlines and mobiles and send SMS anywhere in the world, at great rates. Skype is free to download and easy to use.

What's New In This Version:
Upgrades / improvements include:
- Call using your 3G connection. Skype-to-Skype calls on 3G are free until at least end of August 2010, after which there will be a small monthly fee (operator charges for data will still apply).
- Near CD-quality sound for Skype-to-Skype calls using wideband audio (SILK codec) on iPhone 3GS and 2nd generation iPod touch.
- Enhanced call quality indicator.
- Improved start-up time.
- Fast access to the dial pad from iPhone home screen.

Microscopic Analysis Reveals 960x640 Resolution for New iPhone?

Superiphone.cz claims to have put a next generation iPhone screen under a microscope to determine its pixel density and display technology.

According to the site, the iPhone 4G will use an IPS panel like the iPad with a 960x640 resolution.

Engadget notes that this would quadruple the total number of pixels when compared to the iPhone 3GS, making rescaling apps fairly easy and allowing Apple to claim the highest pixel density seen on a phone yet.

Apparently there are more pics of the Nexus One and iPod touch panels at the site; however, it seems to be down at the moment.

the wifi on my 3gs stopped working twice. both times this is what i did

1)reset network settings then restart with blackrain. (when this is done the wifi becomes greyed out)
2)restart again with blackrain and it usually comes back.

p.s. i usually dont get it to return on the the first two tries, but after a few it comes back. (not sure if i has something to do with my execution of blackrain)
REMEMBER to remove your simcard

Apple listed mobile support for its iPhoto Places geotagging feature in the upcoming iPhone OS 4 release, but it hasn't been working until the latest developer build. Here's what it looks like.

The camera on existing iPhones can already capture GPS or triangulated WiFi location data on the pictures it takes. However, there's no way to view where photos were taken on the phone itself; the pictures have to be synced with a desktop program such as iPhoto that supports geotagging.

In the upcoming iPhone OS 4, just like iPad, there's new support for viewing a map of geotagged photos within the Photos app on the iPhone and iPod touch. A Places tab switches the view from albums of thumbnail views to an integrated map marked with pins (shown below).

Similar to Apple's desktop iPhoto program, the new Places feature within the Photos app can pull up individual pictures or groups of photos from any marked point on the map.

Events, Faces and Places

Previous beta releases of iPhone OS 4 have also included tabs for Events (showing photos by date) and Faces (grouping photos by the people tagged within them), both of which are now missing in the latest build.

Update:Another set of screenshots provided by a second beta tester indicates that the beta 4 build also supports Events. It may be that the Events tab is only displayed when there are photos from multiple days. And because Faces data appears to be synced from iPhoto, that tab may only appear if the mobile device has been synced with a photo album containing tagged identities.

The current beta 4 build is the first one seeded to outside developers with a functional Places user interface, so the change doesn't necessarily mean the Faces features have been dropped or will not appear in the final release.

It is likely that support for Events and Faces will be in the final release, as these features already exist and work fine within the iPad's iPhone OS 3.2 build. At the same time however, the "pinch to preview" album user interface used on the iPad will likely need to be modified or simplified to work within the smaller screen of the iPhone and iPod touch.

Image

As depicted in the Events photos (below), it appears Event albums will be shown as a standard list. It would make sense that Faces would be depicted the same way on smaller mobile devices.

A new easy to access Flashlight feature has been discovered in iPhone OS 4.0 beta 4.

It's unclear if this is an actual feature or a bug; however, triple pressing the lock button while viewing the lockscreen will turn the entire display a bright white. Pressing the button once more returns you to the lockscreen.

If the screen is off a double tap will bring up the white background.

You can see this demoed in the video by treibercc below...

------

New photographs and information claiming to be of the iPhone 4G battery and dock connector components have surfaced on Apple.pro and Mac.com.hk.

Information on the battery reads:
Li-ion Polymer battery
3.7V 5.25Whr
APN :616-0520
VPN:GB-S10-423482-0100

The iPhone 3GS battery is only 3.7V/4.51Whr so this definitely is a more durable battery.

Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 4G/HD at WWDC 2010.

We’ve already heard rumors that Apple’s new iPhone may come with a black or new white colored front panel.

ModMyI has just reported that one of their readers who runs an iPhone repair shop has received parts of the next generation iPhone, which includes the new white colored front panel.

ModMyI reports:

Melech let's us know the digitizer (glass) is much thinner than the 3G/3G[S], and the mid-frame is a solid piece of aluminum pre-cut for inner components.

There is no way to confirm the authenticity of the photos but the casing appears to be similar to the lost next generation iPhone prototype.

iPhone 3GS is now US$97 at Wal-Mart.

AT&T wireless scraps flat-rate Internet plan
New iPhone and iPad customers: AT&T's putting an end to its all-you-can-eat Internet plans.

AT&T on Wednesday announced data plans for new smart phone customers that charge based on how much data they consume.

The move will allow users more flexibility to buy into lower-priced data plans but could spell higher costs for its small but growing base of active Internet subscribers, such as business users.

The company said that starting June 7, new customers of gadgets such as the iPhone and BlackBerry Curve (and soon Apple's 3G wireless-enabled iPad), will choose between two options:

1) A $15 monthly plan for 200 megabytes of data. If you go over that allotment, you will pay $15 for every additional 200 MB of data used.

2) Or $25 for 2 gigabytes of data. If you go over, you'll end up paying $10 for each additional gigabyte.

Existing smart phone customers can renew their unlimited $30 data plans. When asked how long a customer can keep renewing, spokesman Mark Seigel said, "I can't speculate on the future."

The plan affects new subscribers, existing customers who want to upgrade from a basic feature phone to a smart phone, and existing smart phone users who want to switch out of their flat-rate plan.

"To give more people the opportunity to experience these benefits, we're breaking free from the traditional 'one-size-fits all' pricing model and making the mobile Internet more affordable to a greater number of people," said Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO of AT&T Mobility.

Currently, 98 percent of AT&T customers use less than 2 gigabytes of data a month (that's about 16 hours of streaming video). But analysts predict users will suck up more Internet capacity as new devices -- the iPad, iPhone HD, HTC Evo -- hit the market. These tablets and phones are touted for their ability to deliver video and other data-hungry applications better than anything we've seen yet.

The new pricing for data plans is expected to be adopted by other wireless service providers who see greater revenue potential from data usage, particularly as they upgrade their networks to faster fourth-generation (4G) speeds later this year. And it should make users more aware of how much data they consume, which could alleviate congestion on wireless networks -- a problem that has beleaguered AT&T with the popularity of the iPhone, which the company carries exclusively on its network. Check out this interview I had last January with Verizon Wireless CTO Dick Lynch, where he discussed the end of flat rate plans.

Barclays Capital analyst James Ratcliffe wrote today in a note to clients that the pricing changes will "bend the curve" on how users consume Internet data on their wireless devices and that the move could prompt others to follow suit.

Because all current customers would be unaffected, AT&T would face limited backlash, Ratcliffe said. And since very few new customers are likely to hit the price cap, their bills would be lower. Other carriers may find it hard to market their plans against the cheaper AT&T options, he said.

Steve Jobs admitted Tuesday that there "might be" an advantage to having more than one carrier for the iPhone in the U.S., but stopped short of suggesting that such a move could happen anytime soon.

Jobs was questioned about the network performance of AT&T at the opening interview for the All Things D conference held Tuesday. While he said that AT&T is doing "pretty good" in improving its network, he also admitted that the exclusive wireless carrier of the iPhone in the U.S. "could do better" in other respects.

Jobs revealed that Apple and AT&T executives meet once a quarter to discuss issues. He also noted that AT&T deals with "way more data traffic than anyone else."

"They're having trouble," he conceded. "But they have the fastest 3G network and they're improving. I wish they were improving faster."

He said that if the iPhone were on any other network, that carrier would have experienced the same problems. Mossberg then asked Jobs directly if there would be advantages to having other carriers in the U.S., to which he cryptically responded, "there might be." But when pressed as to whether the iPhone would become available on other domestic carriers in the near future, Jobs said: "You know I can't comment on that."

Jobs also revealed that the iPhone OS started on a tablet first. He said he had an idea about a device with a glass, multi-touch display that users could type on. After six months, Apple's engineers and designers came back with an "amazing display," and one of the company's "brilliant UI guys" created some features like inertial scrolling. From there, Jobs said he realized Apple could create a phone with the technology, and put the idea of a tablet aside to create the iPhone.

------

Apple chief executive Steve Jobs took the stage at D8 Tuesday evening to discuss his company's opposition to Adobe Flash on the iPhone OS, as well as the prototype fourth-generation iPhone that turned up in a high profile exposé by Gizmodo.

Jobs was interviewed Tuesday evening by Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher of of The Wall Street Journal. The talk served as the opening event for the annual D: All Things Digital Conference.

Jobs' segment was preceded by an introduction given by News Corp. chief executive Rupert Murdoch, who went overtime speaking about the future of content creation and the iPad while, somewhat ironically, speaking from notes written on letter sized paper.

Jobs on competition and Flash

Swisher noted that Apple's public valuation had passed Microsoft's this week, calling the event "surreal," to which Jobs replied, "It doesn't matter very much. It's not what's important. It's not what makes you come to work in the morning. It is a little surreal."

Mossberg noted that Apple was in bad shape upon Jobs' return to Apple in 1997. Jobs said, "We were 90 days from going bankrupt," noting that things were worse than he had originally thought. "I thought all the good people had left," Jobs said, "but I found [these] amazing people. I said, why are you still here?" After breaking for laughs from the audience, Jobs added, "They said, because I believe in Apple. I love what this place stands for. That just made us want to work that much harder."

Mossberg introduced the "controversy" of Apple's failure to support Adobe Flash on its iPhone OS devices, asking,"is it really fair or the best thing for consumers to just be abrupt?"

Jobs answered, "Apple is a company that doesn't have the resources that everyone else has. We choose what tech horses to ride, we look for tech that has a future and is headed up. Different pieces of tech go in cycles; they have spring, summer, autumn and then they go to the grave. If you choose wisely, you save yourself an enormous amount of work, versus trying to do everything" noting that Apple popularized, then terminated the 3.5 inch floppy drive.

"We were one of the first to get rid of optical drives, with the MacBook Air," Jobs said. "And when we do this, sometimes people call us crazy. Sometimes you have to pick the right horses. Flash looks like it had its day but it's waning, and HTML5 looks like it's coming up."

There's no smartphone shipping with Flash," Jobs said, to which Mossberg responded "but know that there will be." Jobs quipped, "well there 'will be' for the last two or three years. But HTML5 is starting to emerge," the same point Jobs made in his open letter "Thoughts on Flash."

Addressing the "holes" in the web sites where Flash content is not visible on iPhone OS devices, Jobs said, "Those holes are getting plugged... those holes are mostly ads." He also noted that Apple's own HyperCard was even more popular in its day, until the open web began to emerge.

"Our goal is really easy," Jobs said. "We just made a tech decision. We aren't going to make an effort to put this on our platform. We told Adobe to show us something better, and they never did. It wasn't until we shipped the iPad that Adobe started to raise a stink about it. We werent trying to have a fight, we just decided to not use one of their products. They made a big deal of it. That's why I wrote that letter. I said enough is enough, we're tired of these guys trashing us."

Asked if Apple would ever consider putting Flash on the iPad if the market were to demand it and "people say the iPad is crippled," Jobs replied, "Well things are packages. Some things are good in a product, some things are bad. If the market tells us we're making bad choices, we'll make changes. We're just trying to make great products. We don't think this is great and we're going to leave it out. We're going to take the heat because we want to make the best product in the world for customers!" Jobs also noted that Apple was now selling an iPad every three seconds.

Addressing the Gizmodo prototype situation

Mossberg brought up the issue of Apple's missing prototype iPhone and asked Jobs about the police seizure of computers and other equipment belonging to the Gizmodo editor who broke the story, saying the police "go and don't issue a search warrant and […] they grab this journalist's assets," at which point Jobs interrupted to say, "well a guy, who can say if [Jason Chen of Gawker Media] is a journalist." The audience gasped.

"There's an ongoing investigation," Jobs continued. "I can tell you what I do know, though. To make a product you need to test it. You have to carry them outside. One of our employees was carrying one. There's a debate about whether he left it in a bar, or it was stolen out of his bag.

"The person who found it tried to sell it, they called Engadget, they called Gizmodo. The person who took the phone plugged it into his roommates computer. And this guy was trying to destroy evidence, and his roommate called the police. So this is a story that's amazing: it's got theft, it's got buying stolen property, it's got extortion, I'm sure there's some sex in there," Jobs quipped to laughter from the audience.

"The whole thing is very colorful," Jobs said. "The DA is looking into it, and to my knowledge they have someone making sure they only see stuff that relates to this case. I don't know how it will end up."

"Foxconn is not a sweatshop"

When Swisher asked about the recent controversy over a number of suicides at the Shenzhen, China, plant of Apple's overseas manufacturing partner, Foxconn, Jobs responded, "We are on top of this. We look at everything at these companies. I can tell you a few things that we know. And we are all over this. Foxconn is not a sweatshop."

Jobs added, "It's a factory, but my gosh, they have restaurants and movie theaters, but it's a factory. But they've had some suicides and attempted suicides, and they have 400,000 people there. The rate is under what the US rate is, but it's still troubling."

The suicide rate at the Foxconn plant was 13 out of 400,000 employees in the first half of the year, less than the U.S. rate of 11 per 100,000. "We had this in my hometown of Palo Alto," Jobs said, "copy cat suicides. We're over there trying to understand this. It's a difficult situation."

Jobs on competing with Google

Mossberg changed the subject to competitors, noting that Jobs had long fought a platform war with Microsoft, but was now making a comeback in smartphones, asking Jobs if he thought there was a platform war going on.

Jobs answered, "No, and I never have. We never saw ourselves in a platform war with Microsoft, and maybe that's why we lost!" Jobs reiterated his stance that Google chose to compete with Apple by entering the smartphone market. "We didn't go into the search business," he said.

Asked if he "was going to remove them from the iPhone," Jobs said no. "We want to make better products then them," he said. "What I love about the marketplace is that we do our products, we tell people about them, and if they like them, we get to come to work tomorrow. It's not like that in enterprise... the people who make those decisions are sometimes confused. Just because we're competing with someone doesn't mean we have to be rude."

Asked about Google as a competitor on the desktop with the Chrome browser, Jobs answered, "Well Chrome is not... you know. And it's based on WebKit, work we did at Apple. Almost every modern browser is based on WebKit: Nokia, Palm, Android, RIM has one, and of course ours. We've created a real competitor to Internet Explorer. In the mobile space it's number one."

------

New photos depicted a white back cover, glass digitizer, and midboard of the iPhone 4G have surfaced on PowerBookMedic.

The digitizer resembles the 3G and 3Gs with the exception of a camera hole next to the top speaker. The back case doesn’t resemble anything we’ve seen so far. The photos do confirm these will likely be available in white.

One other note is that the model # of the device in these pictures is XXXXX. Usually that indicates a prototype model. Usually you don’t see prototype pictures so close to a model release, which makes us wonder if the iPhone 4G really will be released at WWDC.

Have this problem with my ipod touch. Not charging from wall charger or USB. Tried resetting it and no change. Anyone knows who can fix this?

The images there are the same as what happens when I press the buttons on the ipod touch.

You could sync it with Microsoft Outlook and or your Google account (assuming you have either) & I believe both should be able to sync from Outlook & the options from Google.

Also you can sync to a yahoo! account. I wanted to do the opposite to what you did; computer to iPhone; so i guess it should also work.

If you want the database file, it's located "var/mobile/Library/Address Book"

Assuming its jailbroken, you could use a SSH program, e.g. WinSCP & go to

/private/var/mobile/Media/iTunes_Control/Music

where the music should be stored in folders with names like F00 for example. In there the music should be in a format like GJHF.mp3. Once you move them to iTunes, in my experience anyway, the Artist, Album etc info put on should be restored.

Hope it helps

Chris Clark from Release Candidate One makes the case for a Services Menu on the iPhone.

Copy and paste make things possible if you take the time to switch between apps, but the experience sucks, so developers add convenience features, web service integration, and custom URL schemes. Apple provides some great APIs for integrating with the system utilities, but they’re slow moving. There’s no standard MFTweetComposeViewController, and there probably never will be.

Clark envisions a future where every app with a text field could email, tweet, blog, print, transmute, translate or read. The same idea could be applied to images. Every app that displays an image should be able to save, rotate, crop, ftp, set as wallpaper, send to Dropbox, Facebook, Flickr, and more.

His solution for how this might work? A Services Menu.

On the Mac the Services Menu takes the current selection and sends it to another app to be worked on. He notes this is under utilized on the desktop where saving and opening in another application is easy.

Today developers must pick and choose which external features to support, and present a gargantuan list to sate their users’ desires. It’s inefficient and it’s redundant. A system of Services would show only the integration features the user wants, because it can only advertise Services from the apps the user has installed. On the Mac, Services are a niche. On iPhone OS they’d be nothing short of a revolution.

Take a look at this demo video Clark made to illustrate his point.

------

Information from AT&T store reps and a few mathematical calculations make June 18th a likely date for the release of the iPhone 4G, according to the BGR.

We have confirmed with multiple AT&T store reps that their sales quotas for the month of June are ridiculously high. Yes, this means the iPhone is confirmed to launch in June, not July. Knowing how many units stores received per day/week last year, if the iPhone launched in the last week of June, on Friday the 25th, we’re pretty sure the new sales quotas couldn’t be met (in-store orders don’t count as they don’t get recognized until the customer picks them up). We have heard stores having a 25-30% increase in their sales quota, so we’d like to think the next Apple iPhone will launch on Friday, June 18th.

Previous rumors suggested that Apple wants to release the new iPhone as soon as possible due its earlier then expected unveiling.

Google has announced that it will be bringing its Google Goggles app to the iPhone soon, according to ReadWriteWeb.

In a presentation Thursday at the Augmented Reality Event in Santa Clara, California, Google project manager Shailesh Nalawadi was asked about the app during the Q&A. Nalawadi said, "Yes, we will be coming to the iPhone soon."

Google Goggles lets users take pictures of various objects and helps identify them. Items that Goggles can identify include buildings, bridges, landmarks, bar codes, logos, text, business cards and product info for things like books and DVDs.
