This is really sad, I hope people donate whatever they can quickly to the different groups collecting aid, TT might have to send troops through Caricom to help distribute the aid and provide interim security.

I hope the UN does not just build tent cities and forget about the people for a few years as is done elsewhere.

Haiti is to close to relatively stable and wealthy countries to be suffering like this for so long....I was reading just a few days ago how the were doing major roadworks which was already stimulating the local economy...I'm sure that out the door now. Sad.

There is one major incident which have permanently damaged Haiti IMHO

In July 1825, the king of France Charles X sent a fleet of fourteen vessels and troops to reconquer the island. To maintain independence, President Boyer agreed to a treaty by which France recognized the independence of the country in exchange for a payment of 150 million francs - an indemnity for profits lost from the slave trade.

That money by today's standards, is in the 100's of Billions (maybe even close to a Trillion???) That money payed has forever haunted them, they have never recovered since. France had never really forgiven them and it became the play ground of the British and Americans. To loot and plunder as they see fit. Withdrawing huge amounts of money from their national bank at times, bringing the country to it's knees financially speaking.

France blames Haiti for the demise of their "empire"
Napoleon was ready to wage wars, soon to find out that his little black boy cash cow-Haiti, rose up and fought against their imperialistic masters.

Which in turn started a ripple effect around the region with fights for the emancipation across the western world.

England, Spain, Portugal, France have never forgiven Haiti, and they made them pay, both financially and by creating civil unrest.

T&T donates $6.3 million to ravaged Haiti

Trinidad and Tobago has committed US$1 million (TT$6.3 million) towards recovery efforts in Haiti, which is bracing for a huge death toll following Tuesday evening’s massive earthquake.

Prime Minister Patrick Manning said today the Cabinet has decided to provide the financial assistance to its Caribbean Community (Caricom) neighbour even though this country is facing a TT$7 billion debt.

Manning was responding to questions from reporters on the devastation that has beleaguered one of the western hemisphere’s poorest countries after the ceremonial opening of the Third Session of the Ninth Parliament at the Red House, Port of Spain, today.

Manning said the Government is waiting on President Rene Preval’s administration in Haiti to state exactly what it needs to determine the full extent of the assistance this country will provide.

’At any rate we have taken a decision to commit US$1 million to the Haitian effort immediately and we will see what happens afterwards. Things are very tight financially in Trinidad and Tobago now but they are immeasurably worse with the Haitians,’ Manning said.

Is time allyuh open allyuh eyes and accept the reality of the situation, these "wealthy" countries don't give a monkey's ass about haiti or the people, haiti has nuttin...no oil...it's simply a landing pad for the columbians to smuggle their sh1t into florida and hire cheap labour. In the US eyes haiti could sink tomorrow and they won't care...it might actually be better for them...but then again the drug economy and politics go hand in hand...the profits from drugs in the caribbean bigger than the entire combined GDP of the entire caribbean...

Dominican Republic?...ha...even a bigger joke...they simply exploit the haitians for their cheap and sometimes unpaid labour...haitian daughters workin de streets at night...while de boys are professional beggars by day and hand over the returns to their white masters...

Nobody disputing the reality of what was on the ground, it is known facts.

Its Caricom who has to step up in this situation. It is definitely not in the interest of the US and Canada to have a lawless and unstable country so close to their borders...whether the drug trade, increased efforts of illegal immigration, the new security issues: terrorism, piracy and left leaning NGOs complaining about human rights.

Caricom to date has only mouth and no actions...and this is not only now this is years now that they left Haiti to crumble.

$ 6.3 million? Given the apparent magnitude of this disaster I don't have a problem with this amount.

Had the jackarses in charge not squandered resources on big buildings and mega stadium to mine cockroach we may have been able to send more as well...:|

I just hope the international aid makes it to those who need it.

Okay a group down in Munroe Road Chaguanas is starting to put together an aid package in the form of basic construction materials and water tanks etc, this was done for Grenada also. Collections will start soon and the aid will be deployed if and when a Trinidad army contingent goes over...I will post details with info on how to contribute if anyone is interested later on.

I rel glad Haiti getting some assistance because God knows how badly they need it.
But it's just so sad it took an earthquake of this magnitude for them to get the world's compassion.
I still trying to figure out where everybody was when Haitians were eating mud pies :?

the prison in Port au Prince collapsed according to CNN
there are reports of escaped inmates

"Even the main prison in the capital fell down, "and there are reports of escaped inmates," U.N. humanitarian spokeswoman Elisabeth Byrs said in Geneva."

the Archbishop died when the church collapsed - he was cursed too? :|

"U.N. mission head Hedi Annabi of Tunisia was among about 150 people missing,"
He spent his life work in humanitarian aid at the UN in areas like Southeast Asia, Cambodia and Haiti. He is believed to have died while meeting a Chinese delegation to Haiti in Port au Prince when the earthquake struck - he was cursed too? :|
