Might have to write to licencing to say that side mount is the OEM location to get approval, like fogs.

The plates forming the identification mark shall be fixed,
one on the front and the other on the back of the motor vehicle or
trailer, in an upright position, so that every letter or figure on the
plate is upright and easily distinguishable, in the case of the plate
placed on the front of the motor vehicle or trailer from in front of
the motor vehicle or trailer, and in the case of the plate placed on
the back, from behind the motor vehicle or trailer.

LO is a law on to themselves.....not worth headache fighting this in court.

Mentioned to them about that and they said the LO officer said affixed to the bumper.
I know what the law says...I am complying and reverting to how it was originally licensed.

Can you share more info such as station location and vehicle and how long ago it was done?
I would like to get feedback from the station.

Sounds like a station beatup issue more than the law.
Go LO and try the inspection

you can always go to another station,. It is a station beatup, but they bend to refund you.
can private vehicles be inspected at LO for renewals?
