Japan lands on the moon!!!

but battery issues on the lander are threatening the mission
https://edition.cnn.com/2024/01/19/worl ... index.html

Japan’s “Moon Sniper” robotic explorer landed on the lunar surface, but the mission may end prematurely since the spacecraft’s solar cell is not generating electricity, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency said. The agency said it is currently receiving a signal from the lander, which is communicating as expected.

The uncrewed Smart Lander for Investigating Moon, or SLIM, mission landed just after 10:20 a.m. ET Friday (12:20 a.m. Saturday Japan Standard Time), according to telemetry data shared on JAXA’s live broadcast.

Currently, the lander is operating on limited battery power, only expected to last several hours, and the JAXA team is analyzing the data to determine the cause of the solar cell issue and the next steps for the lander. It’s possible that the solar cell issue is due to the fact that the spacecraft is not pointing in the intended direction, JAXA officials said.

There is hope that as the solar angle changes on the moon, the solar cell may be able to charge again, but that may take some time and will depend on whether SLIM can survive the frigid lunar night, the team shared during a news conference.

The agency believes the mission has met the criteria to declare it a “minimum success,” because the spacecraft achieved a precise and soft lunar landing using optical navigation. The touchdown makes Japan the third country this century — and the fifth ever — to land on the moon.

In other news:
A privately-owned spacecraft headed for the Moon has blasted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket was used to launch the lunar lander, nicknamed Odysseus, with the hope that it will land on the Moon's south pole – where scientists predict there could be a source of water.

If all goes well, it will be the first time a private firm has successfully landed on the Moon.

It would also be the first US mission in 51 years to complete a soft touchdown on the lunar surface.

Odysseus Moon lander 'tipped over on touchdown'
https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-68388695

The Odysseus Moon lander is likely lying on its side with its head resting against a rock.

The US spacecraft, which made history on Thursday by becoming the first ever privately built and operated robot to complete a soft lunar touchdown, is otherwise in good condition.

Steve Altemus, CEO of Intuitive Machines, describes what he thinks happened during landing

Its owner, Texan firm Intuitive Machines, says Odysseus has plenty of power and is communicating with Earth.

Controllers are trying to retrieve pictures from the robot.

Steve Altemus, the CEO and co-founder of IM, said it wasn't totally clear what had happened but the data suggested the robot caught a foot on the surface and then fell because it still had some lateral motion at the moment of landing.

Another possibility is that Odysseus broke a leg as it came down. Certainly, inertial measurement sensors indicate the body of the vehicle to be in a horizontal pose.

I will try to get some pics from Kingston, ON if the weather holds. But the forecast looking bleak for next Monday at Fort Henry from all now. But at least the place will get dark because it's 100% there.

Will use a Shade 12 welding glass.
500k to 1M visitors are expected at each of those towns come Monday so is rel madness.

Fun fact: The Sun is 400 times the size of the Moon, but also 400 times further away so it appears to be the exact size of the Sun -almost as if someone purposely designed it that way so we can watch eclipses!

Found a gaseous sulfur compounds and indications of liquid water.

Not life.
But justifies closer inspection.
A water preserving planet might be useful
