The state of New York issued an urgent advisory to pediatricians on Christmas Eve, pressing them to ensure their patients are vaccinated after COVID hospitalizations in children rose four-fold in less than three weeks.

The unusual warning, on Friday night on the eve of a major holiday, comes as the omicron variant of COVID-19 burns like wildfire through New York City's population. More than 20,000 people a day are being infected, and some neighborhoods in lower Manhattan are now among the most contagious spots on Earth.

At this point, the daily number of new COVID hospitalizations is growing more than 30% a day in New York City alone. But the state called out a particular problem in the city with kids, with a four-fold increase in admissions for kids ages 18 and under between Dec. 5 and this week, a span of less than three weeks.

Over the same period, total New York City COVID hospitalizations grew 170%, suggesting that younger kids are getting much sicker at a higher rate now.

What's worse is if you look at the numbers, the covid vaccine even in everyone had taken it, would not have made a damned difference

well right now we have a Delta wave and people dying are from Delta. The vaccines mean more people would have made it out of 2021 alive. I might have been in the hospital right now if I hadn't taken my two shots of AZ.

Come 2022, the game changes with Omicron and its highly mutated spike. The vaccines won't help unless we go hard into convincing people two doses aren't enough and they must take boosters every few months. Completely need to reverse all that messaging we did in 2021.

The Omicron variant continues to spread rapidly in Canada.
Ontario 10,412 new COVID-19 cases and four new deaths yesterday.

When Omicron becomes dominant it may be the way out for these stupid anti-vaxxers to develop immunity. But they should be careful that another variant doesn't mutate and infect them them again, rendering their "natural immunity" effective and thus saving them from severe hospitalization and death. So you can get Covid again if you had covid before with natural immunity? Just like how you can get a cold from a mutated rhinovirus even though you had a cold before last year? By the way cold viruses are very different from flu viruses for the stupid people who are reading this and have always thought that they are the same illness.

OMG wait, is this how vaccines work, and why vaccinated people can get covid but rarely need hospitalization or lead to death except in some cases with co-morbidity? I think this is a new discovery in science.

Omicron appears to be less efficient at entering lung cells.

The omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 may be less efficient at infiltrating the lungs and spreading from cell to cell, compared with other versions of the coronavirus, early studies of human cells in a lab dish suggest. 

This may help explain why some early data from countries such as South Africa and England suggest the strain causes less severe disease. But although omicron may not invade lung cells efficiently, the new study, posted Tuesday (Dec. 21) to the preprint database bioRxiv, confirmed that the variant dodges most of the antibodies made by fully vaccinated individuals. 

And similar to other research, the team showed a "booster" dose of the Pfizer vaccine significantly increased the neutralization power of vaccinated people's antibodies, "though we'd still expect a waning in immunity to occur over time," senior author Ravindra Gupta, a professor of clinical microbiology at the Cambridge Institute for Therapeutic Immunology and Infectious Diseases, said in a statement.

... "Individuals who have only received two doses of the vaccine — or worse, none at all — are still at significant risk of COVID-19, and some will develop severe disease," he said. "The sheer number of new cases we are seeing every day reinforces the need for everyone to get their boosters as quickly as possible."
