South Africa's Omicron outbreak slows as expert says population's T-cell immunity against Covid has kept hospitalisations low and praises government for not locking down

By CHRIS JEWERS FOR MAILONLINE
PUBLISHED: 20:01 GMT, 11 December 2021 | UPDATED: 21:09 GMT, 11 December 2021

South Africa's Omicron outbreak appeared to slow on Saturday as one leading expert said the population's T-cell immunity against Covid-19 has kept hospitalisations low, and praised the government for not locking down.

The number of hospitalisations caused by South Africa's Omicron outbreak has been proportionally lower than its Delta wave leading to speculation that it is a milder strain of the virus.

However experts caution that this could be down to younger people being infected or the fact that 76 percent of the population in the Johannesburg area have previously been infected with Covid.

It remains to be seem how infection-induced immunity to Omicron compares to the vaccine-induced immunity that is more prevalent in Western nations including the US and the UK.

widdy,

What you mean by serious numbers bro?

Remember how everyone was so hyped up for “hundreds of cases” and “double digits” ?

We have that now and it really is a regular day.

Max, do you actually know anyone who had died? Anyone tell you they know someone who died? The news of the deaths are simply numbers.

I don't think people understand that Omicron will be the dominant strain in a few weeks and all that talk about vaccines will mean jackshit

the first case of omicron was discovered a month ago. Most places only have ~2 weeks worth of cases. That is not nearly enough time to assess how severe the illness is, or what the death rate will be like.

but this fantasy of "mild" is here to stop panic. We've been saying "mild" to stop panic all the way since February 2020 and every variant has been called "mild" including the same one that put two dozen people in the ground today.

What happens if everyone in Trinidad gets COVID-19?
Alot will die of course.
But after won't the surviving population be ok?

p_i,

Look around bro, it is mild.

Bodies are not rotting and burning on the pavement and the healthcare system is still up and running. Bars, streets, malls etc are FULL……….Mild

Over 500+ cases a day and approx. 20+ dead a day? Brother to me that is catastrophic…..but look at how the population is dealing with..Mild and without a damn care.

When it’s no longer Mild, we will know.

50 is the magic number hover.

But in all seriousness, I think there's now overwhelming evidence that Omicron is more mild than previous strains. Hopefully that stays true.

To sum up our present situation: we're just experiencing what the rest of the world experienced earlier this year and last year. Last couple days, Ive been in and around friends and family who either contracted, fighting up or died/dying in hospitals. GRANDE IN A MESS! Just a couple of weeks ago a mother gave birth and then died from c19. Father of said child died from the virus today. Poor kid

The rate of infections and deaths is nearly identical in Trinidad now as what was in the US and UK last December before any vaccines were available.

Contact tracing makes no sense due to the magnitude of daily cases, it's community spread, my thing is omnicron could be here already and we would never know

I'm not sure I understand the logic of the MOH regarding the use of the recent arrival of 305,000 Pfizer doses as booster shots.

The majority of the vaccinated population got sinopharm, which might be the least effective of the vaccines we have. Instead of giving these people a Pfizer booster, they're gonna give them a 3rd dose of sinopharm?? Doesn't make sense, especially with the data showing that a Pfizer booster is very effective against severe illness with the new variants.

Are we saving the Pfizer to use as 1st doses for the unvaccinated?? Guess what.... they're not interested in getting any vaccine. It might end up expiring and we still waiting for them to get some common sense.

They are probably saving the Pfizer for the children 5-11 years old since approval for that age group might be coming soon from the WHO, we already know the FDA approved that long time for the US. They want primary schools to re-open in January.

Contact tracing should be the least of your worries. It have people that died, buried and still waiting on autopsy results, it have people who return to work after recovering and still waiting on a fit to work paper, it have people who home sick like a dog and still waiting on test results....continue?

I think the reason for not boosting with the Pfizer, is due to the sinopharm not being a mRNA type of vaccine. I could be wrong.... especially since I am not in the medical field.

There are also people who got sick and tested positive and also infected many others in their family but the others are not bothering to test because they know they have it too - they don't count towards the Covid positive national count but they are infected and sick at home.
