Carnival Vending Booths Set on Fire- Suspect Arrested

A suspect has been arrested following the destruction by fire, of several Carnival vending booths around the Queen’s Park Savannah this afternoon.

On receipt of a report, officers of the Police Service and Fire Service responded within minutes. The fire officers quickly extinguished the fire, while police officers detained a suspect, who lives at Mc Shine Lane, Belmont.

The suspect was taken to the Four Roads Police Station for questioning.

Ok for folks not familiar with the area. For several years now they set up booths around the Savannah for vendors to sell. The vendors pay to rent them for a specific period. Once carnival over the vendors leave and the booths remain abandon until whatever organization removes it.

Now the problem is they take a minimum of 1 - 3 months before they even start to remove the booths. They become problematic (homeless ppl move in. Ppl including runners use it as a toilet etc). The situation got worse this year because of covid since no activity was happening. I believe they started to tear down some of the booths (near the traffic lights) when the lock-down happened.

In addition the concrete barriers (by memorial park) also are not restored to their original position. Posing a threat for vehicles going around memorial park. The one barrier that drivers usually hit for 10 points is especially needed back. I guess they waiting for a serious accident to happen before they take action.

Likewise the stage downtown (south quay) remains up for months before they take it down. It takes up the pavement so you have to walk in the road and displaces the taxi stand nearby.

I don`t know if is laziness or poor planning but every year we know the date of carnival and every year the stuff remains up long after carnival over for a ridiculous amount of time.

You have a local protest action which is essentially an extension of a foreign one using the same issues and even the same name. The foreign one has been associated with looting and burning stuff down and even right here many tuners have been calling for "it to all burn down"
