Peugeot 405 Electrical issue

Postby CrisenB » March 16th, 2015, 10:02 pm

I have a manual Peugeot 405 with 2.0L original engine. was driving when suddenly the car began to lose power and idle dropped. After parking the car for a few hors, I entered the car and proceeded to start, the car sounded lazy so I pressed the nuture switch hoping it would help. A few minutes after I drove out, the car cut off and gave a lot of trouble to start, when it finally started, smoke came from the trunk (location of my battery) and by the time I got to the trunk to disconnect the terminal from my battery, the ground wire was completely burnt.

I changed the ground wire and now when the car starts, the idle drops soo low that the car cuts off. I am not sure if it is that the brain now has a bad mapping or if there is further electrical issues.

What would cause the ground to burn?

Any advice or help?

Have you done a comprehensive check of the cars electrical wiring ? You just don't replace a burnt ground wire without finding the root cause.

My advice would be to ensure your electrical system is ok first.

Experienced a similar problem with my 206 but ground wire didnt burn . Car idling low and cutting off were due to step up motor needing to be change and electronic reset of engine . (Thats what David Hobbs did and he got back car to work) so you can trouble shoot. Hope was some assistance.

Thanks. I cleaned the stepper motor and the car no longer cuts off. I also put an 8 fuse on the battery to prevent any alternator issues and will soon change the alternator voltage regualtor.

TRD GUY the reason I just changes it as I suspected that it might have been slack and caused arcing off to occur. I sanded down the grounding point and put an 8 fuse on the live side.

So that wasn't the issue as I started the car just now and as soon as I put it in gear and began rolling, the car cut off. I had put on an 80A fuse and it has burnt.

Was a simple fix. The live wire was grounding off where the insulation had a split, could have just taped over it but I already bought 0 gauge wire so I decided to change the wire. Car now works perfectly, no electrical glitches what so ever.
