Mazda Familia/323/Protege BJ 323 ZL-VE questions

Postby bobks » July 8th, 2014, 9:19 am

Hi,
as an owner of a 2002 323F BJ with the 1.6 ZM-DE engine, I'm interested in questions about a ZL-VE conversion - at first, only theoretical, because in Western Europe, nobody seems to have done that yet. From what I've read, the Maztune guys here seem to know about it.

http://www.protegefaq.net/ says that the ZL-VE head is a direct bolt-on to the ZM-DE block. Best of both worlds would be then using the european ZM-DE block (compression ratio 9.7:1) with the ZL-VE head and the euro ZM-DE intake manifold, including VICS, and the ZL-VE 4-2-1 exhaust manifold instead of the stock 4-1. I would keep the gearbox, because the euro version has shorter ratios in 5th gear and final drive compared to the JDM/USDM Version.

Main problem will be the engine management/ECU and harness, I think, to make everything working together, especially fitting with German emission regulations and vehicle inspection certificate (nearly impossible, I think) and getting all required parts (the ZL-VE is quite common in Russia, but I've no connections there).
So everything is merely a game of ideas.

For example, what I don't know is if the ZL-VE has a catalytic converter. The euro ZM-DE has the converter directly bolt on to the exhaust manifold, and so I think it wouldn't fit to the 4-2-1 "header".
Do the ZL-VE equipped cars have other modifications (brakes, suspension etc.)?

So, if someone here would share his experience, many thanks.
Sorry for my English...
Greetings
Bob

is your car right hand drive?
the later zlve out of japan is oxygen sensor and catalytic converter equipped.
the full harness and ecu is easily acquired and you can get the zlve head installed on a zmde block easily

Thanks, this sounds interesting. So I think I would need the exhaust downpipe and catalytic converter, too.
Are there any pictures in the net how a zlve exhaust looks like?
zlve http://www.avto-kontrakt.com/_sh/13/1341m.jpg
zlde/zmde http://jdmenginesusa.com/images/EnginePics/Full/dscn8598.jpg with the catalytic converter mounted directly to the manifold.
But my car is left hand drive - does this make a difference?
The zlve in Russia are RHD - probably there were no LHD zlve-equipped cars built.

the pic you posted of the zlve mani is only part of the manifold you will need both parts with the downpipe you can move the cat lower down on the piping to remain compliant.
I know the zmde type you are referring too it is the same as the USDM cars.
im not 100% sure of the limitations of the lhd wiring but the rhd zmde and zlve wiring are very similar and the ecu has the same pinout.
I have a zlve exhaust mani on the ground when i get a chance i will take a pic for you

Hi, thanks!
I've found everything about the different exhausts here:
http://mazda.epcdata.ru/familia/ajba09/4_kit_injection_cooling/4000/#4000AB
http://mazda.epcdata.ru/familia/ajba09/4_kit_injection_cooling/1310/#1310AB
The (1500CC)(no variable valve timing) parts are the same a in my car.
So maybe the exhaust system alone could help a little performance for the zmde.

The euro zmde is not quite the same as in the USDM cars - higher compression ratio and inlet manifold with VICS.

To be precise, the socket for the id light bulb. Can't get it anywhere n I'm guessing this is the only way I can find it. O if there is an alternative.... Help ah fellow 3 series mazda owner out nah. Could anyone advise on the best tranny oil to use? Gonna start using amsoil 20/50. Is that a good thing?

Well I think this might be the best place to sell some Mazda parts I have lying around. pair of Headlights , Indicator lights , Instrument cluster,Ash Tray, park lights all from a PAW 323 I had. I swapped the light for the double lights and just put these away.
I came upon them in a wooden box, even the bottom of the box looks new.
PM me .

Lets be honest, nothing you can throw at that engine will make it significantly faster for the money.

Easiest, fastest way is an engine swap to an FS or bigger. Immediate gains for the same money as ZL performance parts that will have little effect.
