Question (didn't feel I should start a new thread just for this):

So I'm looking at the RE-Amemiya Super Dolphin exhaust (RX8 app)...looks awesome right?

Image

But....the "axleback"section shown above can be coupled (optionally) with a rear-pipe (not to confused with the MIDpipe) like this:

Image

Notice the flared section on the rearpipe (exhaust would be mounted on the right of the pic).

Any thoughts as to why it's designed this way?

wow that exhaust looks really nice...re amemiya dolphin tail ftw! ... as for the flared part i am really not 2 sure but i vaguely remember reading about NA exhausts vs turbo exhausts and they said something about the NA exhausts need for "scavenging" the exhaust pulses to maximise power output...whereas in the turbo exhausts straighter and bigger is better as the turbine wheel chops up and pulses anyway...probably the flared part is something to help this "scavenging" effect of pulses?...on the other hand maybe its like a small silencer type thing?...it doesnt look like it though...

^It's really ODD imho....but if I'm not mistaken, AutoExe has a similar rear pipe as well. NOt sure if they just tried to knock off Re-Amemiya's unit or not.

I'm not sure if it's a silencer, since RE-Amemiya also offers their version of a dual resonated midpipe, to work with this one.

i read that most aftermarket systems on the rx8 actually cause power loss, intake, exhaust etc, maybe the japanese know somn the americans dont, i.e. wrt tuning exhaust systems(ok ok, they know plenty more than the americans)

Yep supposedly some of them do, or offer no real gain at all. It's more of a sound thing.

The few that don't are AFAIK those like the HKS Legamax, HKS Hi Power, Racing beat and RE-Amemiya units. Gains aren't that much....real gains (if I could call them that) come from the midpipe swap apparently, in conjunction with a catback.

Regardless, not many folks have ideas about this weird rear pipe design - even on the foreign forums.
