Waw - memories indeed.
I switched to a Mazda 3 from the BJ 323 I had earlier in this thread (gotta love the Mazda handling!!!)
Anyway both of them had that dreaded green "Min 95+" sticker on the inside of the gas door.
I also tried super in the MZ3 for a while a couple years ago, and it worked. By worked means I didn't hear any pinging, but it was noticeably more sluggish compared to when I used premium. Hence i stuck with premium.
Now with the 44% increase, I may have no alternative to go back super and handle the performance loss.
But this time I can actually monitor the effects on my engine with my Scan Gauge. So if there's too much knock and the timing is being retarded too much, i may have to stick with premium or try an octane boost.
Even though the premium cost is prohibitive, a damaged or failed engine is worse.
Will see how it goes...

Kamla says that premium is a luxury...maybe you should sell the mz3 and buy something cheaper...like a bicycle...this fuel price hike is real BS.

So if you in Jamaica, Barbados, Grenada, St. Lucia etc.. it's 95 but in T&T it's 90? Our fuel soo good!?

Pay more use premium. Super costs less but risky.

This is what my manual says

My car is a 2005 model, so either the quality of our gas improve from 2005 to 2012, or Mazda did something to the engine to better handle lower octane (same 1.6 MZR).

Also, I'm on my 2nd tank of super now, and according to the Scan Gauge the engine is pulling the timing back MUCH more than with premium. With the premium, I used to see at most maybe around 5 to 6 degrees of knock retard but only occasionally (I always doubted our premium was 95 RON).
Now with the super, i see the knock retard pulling back timing MUCH more frequently, sometimes upwards of 7 or 8 degrees, and even while cruising on the highway maintaining a steady speed with minimal load on the engine. But there's still no audible pinging.
I'm still a bit concerned about the level of knock retard, but so far the engine and ECU seem to be able to compensate for the super.
My second super fill up was yesterday evening, and I added a bottle of Prestone octane booster to it to see what improvement, if any, it would make versus the untreated super gas.
On the drive home, the car was pulling back the timing back noticeably less (both in terms of actual degrees and frequency) than without the octane booster, but its still to early to make any definitive conclusions.
I'll continue monitoring it and keep you guys posted.

Sorry snight, now seeing your post.
I'll keep that in mind. However, at 1/2 the price of premium some may have no choice if they do a lot of driving.
I just want to see for myself what effect the super has on my car. The scan gauge readings off the 1st tankful were a bit worrysome, but there was no audible knock or pinging. It also showed the A/F ratio to be holding pretty safe.
But if the octane booster doesnt improve things noticeably, I may very well switch back to premium.

i was thinking about using super before the budget, have a 2005 mzd3 and always used premium gas...filled up twice already with super gas and has noticed nothing different with the switch, and i have been using premium for 7 years now....feels good to see the gas gauge not going from full to empty to fast tho..lol
