What I'd like to know is if all WRX 5spd gearboxes (pre 2004) carry the same clutch and pressure plate.

Afaik, the only noted variances in clutch type, 06-07 carries push type and pre 06 carries pull type

Should.....simply take out the old one and carry it when buying a new one either way, its always the better thing to do.
