Water Methanol Injection on Subarus. Whats your Views.

Postby riderz » July 3rd, 2008, 8:35 am

So, how does Water injection work for you. I for one have used it for the past year and I can say it does do as the product manufactures suggest.

The coolingmist kit is one of the popular applications. I went with the trunckmount progressive injection with the Super High Speed Valves. Nice simple installation.

The installation itself took about 1 hour and required not much tools. I prefer to crimp the wires for more insulated protection than twisting them and taping. That in itself speeds up the installation process.

Tuning.
The whole idea behind WMI kits is to do two things.
1. Cool the intake temps
2. Raise the fuel octane.

Some say with a 50/50 mix its like rasing over 100octane from pump. Some say a 30/70 (W/M) would yeild about 120octane from pump gas.

This is done in two stages, as you go into boost the kit activates and mists the mixture from the tank into the boost path. This enters the intake and then the chamber. The water in the mixture takes heat with it down through the exhaust lowering the exhaust temps. This reduces knock.

The Methanol in the mixture raises the octane in the fuel (remember this is an alcohol based liquid).

Both action inadvertently raises the octane level, and allows you to run, more boost, more ignition and leaner mixtures. All these deliver power.

The downside.
If the pump fails or any other item in the WMI kit fails you leave your engine prone to damage. Its advisable to install a failsafe to the system

Secondly you must monitor you tank to ensure it doesnt run dry.

Thirdly, tuning is necessary. If you add WMI to the stock system the mixture being injected displaces the air that should be there. You would run rich and lose some power. Its advisable to lean mixtures slightly to compensate. Of course monitor knock and AFRs when you do this.

Taught it over for the past few months and decided to take this route

My CoolingMist WMI kit has a 1 Gal tank and flow sensor... but, I am thinking of also taping into the washer fluid bottle as well and fill that with distilled water for the extra capacity.

If this makes sense that is?

I plan to run plain water at first for the daily runs and hill climbs through Maracas ;)

then use 60/40 Water/Meth for the brisk runs

Another way you could extract some nice power.

The $10...50whp mod.

So you tuned for water and methanol. Trust me you would be putting out some nice numbers. But you too damn lazy to go to your supplier to by meth. Well you dont have to turn down your boost and drive a granny car.

Buy a bag of ice. Fill your meth bottle to 2/3 and top up the rest with ice. If you can lean your mixture out a little. In the hottest of days you should get about 6 hrs if you can top up with the ice.

If you running just water. You may need to dial back boost a little but still lean your mixtures if they are under 11.2 (dont lean if you are already at threshold)

Refill?

Refill with what?

Water or Methanol

Methanol normally cost about $50 a gal could last about 3 Gas tanks. And you could fill it yourself as easy as pouring it in.

Thats because you have never really seen any of those top STI or EVO. You ever ride in anything over 500whp paddna. I have seen 512whp with meth, 450whp 350Z with meth, 480whp STi with meth.

The thing is different tuners prefer different things. So MZM and AMS may prefer bigger injectors on pump, but other tuning shops prefer water meth. MZM market their tuning thru DCsports so more and more people are directed to their site but they are not the only ones that build engine etc.

My friends in Texas have 500whp daily drivers, you think that they do it on pump gas whole day. Think again.

Question:what if for some reason, your water meth mixture finishes while driving.. then what?
1. Stay out of boost?
2. If your car is tuned to run on super gasoline, go fill up some premium to get the higher octane benefit?

Stay out of boost is the easiest. You don't need/use meth in vacuum. If in worst case scenario I would fill with water and turn down boost. Premium would also help.
