WTK HKS EVC 5

anyone has experience with a HKS EVC 5 boost controoler?...

agreed

but i have installed a HBC Halman boost controller(pro series) into my car do some research on it

it is a manual boost controller that can be adjusted inside of your car

yeh in a subbie.. a 2003 bug eye.. came with the vehicle... what are your opinions?

Nah, running a BC in a subaru is like trying to instal windows 3.1 in a IMAC. Its going backwards.

The Subaru ECU can control Boost and Wastegate efficiently. If you looking for more response just throw in a Prodrive or Perrin Electrontic boost control solenoid.

The whole idea of the ECU controlling boost is to provide a measure of safety, if the car is ping badly the ECU will cut you boost by half.

Some mechanics dont know this feature and throw in a boost controller saying that the wastegate failing. Of course making your car even more prone to failure, as the knock wasnt corrected and they removed the failsafe.

Seen many failures on friend subaru engines and did a lot to assist where I can.

hks evc is a great product......runnin it in a spec c and it doing the job.
ppl dont know how to tune it so they shittin up their EJs..

HKS' all-new EVC (Electronic Valve Controller) is the first boost controller to feature integrated CPUs in each component (Display Unit, Control Module, and Stepping Motor) for more precise control, quicker response and improved boost pressure stability. This race proven system is available in KPA measurement and features an easy-to-read LCD panel that can be positioned separately from the control module for driver convenience.

Feature and Benefits:

COMPACT DESIGN The new ¼ DIN control unit, ½ DIN display unit and stepping motor are all compact in design, making for easier installation and mounting inside the cockpit and in the engine compartment.

DIGITAL AND ANALOG DISPLAY The digital display shows real time / peak hold measurements while the adjustable range analog bar graph helps with intuitive perception of boost levels.

WIDE SCREEN MULTI-DISPLAY A reverse illumination white display allows for improve visibility in various lighting conditions. The display shows multiply measurement readings for on the spot data confirmation.

INTELLIGENT STEPPING MOTOR A CPU is imbedded into the stepping motor. This creates more direct and accurate control as the CPU virtually eliminates lag time between the stepping motor and control module. Thereby increasing linear boost control and stability.

HIGH BOOST CAPABILITY A wide range of boost control is possible, from stock boost all the way up to 250 kPa (2.5 bar / 36.25 psi).

EASY BOOST SET-UP 2 individual boost levels can be easily set by simply turning the volume knobs of the control module.

2 MODE BOOST SETTING FUNCTION Separate A and B boost level settings can be tuned according to the user’s preference and can be switched via the control module or display unit.

PEAK HOLD FUNCTION A peak hold function monitors and displays highest boost level attained to aid in tuning and performance. The peak hold valve is simultaneously displayed with the real-time measurement for full data viewing.

SCRAMBLE BOOST FUNCTION A scramble boost function is integrated in the display unit. When the SBC button is pressed, an increased boost level is triggered for a selectable amount of time between 0-40 seconds.

WARNING FUNCTION When boost levels exceed the warning levels, the display will flash and a buzzer will sound while the boost level returns to its baseline setting to protect possible engine and turbo damage. The warning boost level is also displayed as part of the multi-display data.

STOCK BOOST RETURN FUNCTION When the EVC is turned off, the boost level setting will automatically return to stock (baseline boost).

WASTEGATE SELECTION FUNCTION Can be used with either internal (swing valve) or external (poppet style) wastegates.

DIMMER FUNCTION The display unit illumination can be adjusted for user preference.

DATA MEMORY FUNCTION Data memory is stored in a CPU in each component. Therefore settings are retained if power is disconnected.

DATA LOCK FUNCTION A security code can be inputted to protect against accidental changes in settings.

This product is just another electronic boost controller. It intercepts the boost coming from the compressor to the Internal Wastegate Actuator or External Wastegate dump valve.

'Tuning' its simply setting your boost levels and adjusting your gain in respect to the duty cycles. To much gain boost comes in early and you spike, to little gain and you get a slow laggy boost curve.

There is nothing big to tuning the EVC5, what destroys engines are engine knock and oil starvation. Engine knock can be a result of lean mixtures, to much compression, low octane and too much boost.

This product cost more than $US500 in some cases. When installed you get boost switching on the fly, but you take away the ability for the ECU to manage the turbo. What you dont know is, once you overshoot the values that are set in the boost map, your car automatically detects this and an error and attempts to compensate. You will in be robbing youself of power as your ecu corrects.

The stock system, I admit is woefully inadequate for higher boost levels, but you can replace the solenoid with a GM, Perrin, Taxtric, Cobb, AEM boost control solenoid and retune the ECU.

With a 2003 STi we hit 22 PSI at 3400rpm, 21 at 3200 and held boost all the way to redline with the stock turbo. That is with the stock ECU. Engine putting out just about 300whp and no knock.

So its not that anybody is bad mouthing the product, its just simply the Subaru ECU has the capability to do more that the EVC5 could ever do, including offer a failsafe if something occurs.
