WTK: CS3 4G18 Transmission options

Postby virtual.dek » May 6th, 2015, 1:00 pm

The CVT Transmission in my CS3 Lancer (Local) is no longer working (Just under 200,000km).

I am also on a tight budget and I wish to get some advise on whether I should Rebuild/Repair it, purchase a Used CVT Transmission or consider the unknown possibility of retrofitting a Gearbox (based on my inconclusive research).

This is what I know so far (Please note that I am not a car-savvy, so please advise me otherwise)

1. Rebuilding a CVT Transmission can cost just as much as a Used one (Approx $6000-8000)

2. The CVT Transmissions for my 2004/5 CS3 Lancer are all about 10 years old, and it is difficult to determine the condition of them at the time of purchase. So, there is still a risk of the Used CVT Transmission not lasting very long then ending up in this same situation a few months from now.

3. Retrofitting a CK Gearbox from a 4G92 SOHC (F5M41) requires lots of rare parts and serious expertise, and there is mixed information that this gearbox can actual fit onto a stock 4G18 SOHC. This sounds time-consuming and kind of expensive, considering the risk.

4. Swapping engine/transmission for a 4G15, 4G93(T) GDI/GSR which is an expense that I am not really prepared for.

All recommendations will be gratefully appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Go with #1 and rebuild.
Why?
Well I once had transmission problems, over three years ago. I had the same options as you. I had mine rebuilt by Jenton Transmission Specialist. I have never had transmission problems up until this day.
With the rebuild, new parts are being used. Bearings, solenoids, clutches and filter. In most cases you also get a warranty, and you have the ease of mind in knowing that if it fails, it will be fixed and also that you have a basically new transmission. With a foreign used one, as you said, you will not know the condition of it.

Converting to a gearbox is nice but without the manual ECU which is hard to get, you will encounter some problems in actual driving when you have crossed certain speeds. In addition, a few very minor modifications have to be done. This conversion may cost more that rebuilding the CVT.

Thanks for the advise. Appreciate it.

Bearings in the transmission start to thread out. If you leave it like that it will just not drive one day. Transmission hadda come down for that to be done. Might as well change the filter while in there.
