The OFFICIAL Sharkmouth Galant Thread

Postby de_dougla_smurf » February 6th, 2014, 10:50 pm

This thread was created out of a need for Galant owners to have a go to thread to discuss Q&A and general comments regarding the 7G and 8G Galants.

Thread also created because of the >9000 Lancer threads which exist in the forum.

lll start by attaching workshop manuals that I have happened to come across in web surfing.

Attachments are the 4G9X workshop manual, JDM and USDM 8G workshop manuals, and 8G electrical workshop manual.

They can be downloaded here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/qwwx3 ... Galant.rar

VRG to VR4 conversions are generally discussed in Banzai's VRG to VR4 Conversion thread : viewtopic.php?t=176661 or here:

Additional part number resource added for ALL E-Series Galant chassis in first post.

http://mitsubishi.epc-data.com/galant/

I believe most common chassis locally are the EA1A and EA7A.

Tuners, What are some viable 4 hole brake swap/upgrade options for the shark? I am not really satisfied with the stock setup (drums in the back as well).

Any advice?

Smurf

The ones I know that will fit comes off the Galant Super Saloon or Exceed models. Same EA1A/EC1A family. They come with 4 wheel disc brakes. Check Seenath's; they had the entire rear brake setup for around $2,000 about a month ago. Price might have changed since; other than that we can always use the VR-4 setup, but as you know that is 5 hole, new rims for sure, but to upgrade would be easier, as EVO 7-9 will fit on our cars

Just to add to this topic. Check these sites out as well:

http://mitsubishi.epcdata.ru/galant/ea1a/srgcz/

Has diagrams of the parts you are looking for, but its in Russian, so compare them with amayama.com for the US$ quote. I buy most of my parts from them. Reasonable depending on what you need plus its original.

http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/

You can use the OEM part numbers from amayama.com and check rockauto. They are in the US and are much faster if the parts are in stock.

http://www.partswebsite.com/courtesymitsubishi/

Used them once, had the part I was looking for, but you need the OEM number. They supply the US market only. Few parts are interchangeable between US models and JDM mainly the Eclipse Year 1995 to 1999 (front suspension) & 2000 - 2005 (rear suspension)

Ebay.com - Lol don't knock it eh. They carry our parts but it depends what you are looking for. Bought a pair of rack ends from a vendor on ebay. Still going strong quality is generally good once you know what you're looking for. You can use in conjunction with Rockauto website as quite a few of the vendors buy parts from Rockauto and sell them on ebay, benefit of lower prices can be taken advantage of.

Resale value is low due to "oh goarrr boi, is GDI" and when compared to lancers and nissan and toyota models of the same age.

Mechanically, suspension and brake parts are pretty cheap from my experience, engine mounts $275, new struts $310, FU strut and spring complete $200 each, front disc pads $175.

Prices get steeper for engine parts and associated electronics.

My $0.02

Here's one.

Engine 4G94 GDI.

When running hard (150+) and I release the accelerator, I would sometimes get a random click from under the dash with a simultaneous flash from the check light, for a split second. Is this a symptom of something more serious or should I just check for loose jacks/sensors/wiring? (Didnt find any obvious faults)

Yep, running hard, 4th gear, ~3000 rpm, but only when I release the X to decelerate.

Galant people

What mods have you done to "Sharks"?

We know about the infamous SR20 conversions, Pros and Cons which need to be stated. The 6A13's, 4G93's; 94's & 93T's; even those with the 4G63T conversions. However I'm purist. Mitsubishi all the way for me. So up for discussion - who put what under dey hood. The benefits, the failures, etc. In short, the good, the bad and the ugly. The reason....so we all can benefit from each experiences if ever a time comes to change.

My Shark still has its original 4G93 which was rebuilt when its timing belt jump a couple of teeth; along the way I added a few things to it.

So here goes: mods list
EA1A Galant - 4G93 GDI
1) Rebuilt engine to spec - new pistons, rings, main & rod bearings (OEM & ACL), lifters, etc
2) underdrive 4G93 pulley
3) Cold intake & K&N air filter
4) polyurethane bushings - the whole car
5) kyb AGX & Eibach springs - installed when I bought the car

Currently running 225/40/18 on continental's .... looking for some 17's though

P.S would have gone 6A13 but d girlfriend drives it sometimes....not going to risk killing people

For the guys who talking about cold air intakes Galant's come from factory already with a very good stock cold air intake. All that's needed is a better drop in filter......

How does the Iridium plugs perform and what are the OEM Number for them?

Xtech, I hear what you are saying....the K&N drop in filter works. Just that I'm planning on doing a mod for the intake. Don't want to destroy the original if it don't work.

Also, you guys can use the EVO 8 aluminium radiator as a replacement for the OEM, with slight modifications - mainly removing the bottom peg and adjusting to suit the bracket - the only thing is that as its for a manual car you'll have to get a transmission oil cooler as well.

Anyone was successful in flashing their ECU (4G93's)?

Works well for me. No performance issues.

They are BKR5EIX-11 NGK.

@xtech: I observed that the intake setup is very similar to the vr4, which says something, but its very quiet. Forgive me if I want the noise to stroke my ego a bit.

The VR4 rad works pretty well. The engine temp rarely gets to half, even under sustained heavy load.

Eveyone I had that discussion about the ecu, both on and off tuner said the same thing. No one has ever bothered to crack to ecu for tuning because of how strict the gdi programming is. They all advised to go the way of 6a13tt or 4g63t where engine management and aftermarket parts are easier to come buy.

Love that white vr4 brotherhood, any engine and side views?

Keep the lists coming.

EDIT:
@xtech + other gurus: what are your thoughts on decat and extractors for gdi engines. How to get around the sensors because im assuming it will initiate a check light and/or extreme rich or lean burns after this is done.

Hmmm all the ECUs has been hacked. Just nobody is really interested in tuning. One guy flashed his GDI-T Lancer.

So it's possible just nobody cares
