Moving from 4g18 to 4g15 DOHC or 4G92 SOHC, would this be a step back guys? Like seriously, what are your thoughts on this. The reason I asked is because I've been taking lately about possibly changing my enigine next year, main reason is because it is 218000+ km and the CVT tranny has never given me probems as yet (1000 knocks on wood).
What are your thoughts on this guys? I will not go back 4G18 because of the CVT and the wifey can't drive stick.
In terms of price and availability of parts how does the 4g15 compare to the 4g92?
What about performance, is there a significant difference?

As the owner of both these engines in two seperate CK lancers over the last 4 years, I personally would go with the 4G92 SOHC.
I have had more problems with the 4G15 DOHC engine over the years. From the annoying tic, tic, tic hydraulic lash adjusters (hydraulic tappets if you prefer) to loosing an entire block for that stupid crankshaft pulley problem. You have to also keep in mind that the 4G15 DOHC engine is found on foreign used cars, it was never on the local lancers. That being said, you would find it a bit harder to source basic maintainance parts such as spark plug wire sets, distributor bodies, tappet pan gaskets and spark plug chamber O-rings, MAP sensors etc, etc.
You might have some problems sourcing some of these items for the 4G92 SOHC too, but it's moreso for the 4G15.
Performancewise, the 4G92 has the edge over the 4G15 in terms of horsepower and torque, so do yourself a favour and go 4G92.
My 2 cents.

lol so I guess u staying 4G18 based on this guy horror stories...best u stay with a new engine....lol
All Mitsu use the exact same hydraulic lifters an they begin to tick when u use wrong oil or leave it in to long. GDIs tick a lot because it gets carbon build up in the oils which clog the tiny lifter oil ports
Parts wise all them mitsu engines hard to source parts for locally.....
I have had a 4G15 CK lancer no problem at all an it drove me Toco everyday from sando for about 6 months. Acceleration was great from that little motor
Had a 4G15GDI CS with CVT which I added a tranny cooler to help save it an i even trained myself so when at a stand still like at a stop light I always neutralize the car so No problems in the 2 years I had it.... Still do that today in my other cars even though they not CVT
4G93 SOHC was bess in my other CK
Was looking for a MIVEC head to rest on it but I sold it.
Also xtech is right the 4G18 is a export only engine and the Japs always keep the best for themselves. Personally I never liked the engine but seen some guys hybrid it with the 4G15 head an get some extra power out of it, some just ok with turbo alone.
If upgrading look for a 4G92 since it has more aftermarket options an online support than the 4G1x series which is purely a econobox motor Vs semi race bred 4G9x series

^^No, I think I really need to consider chaning the motor next year as the current mileage is 225000km+...I'm still in the preliminary stages with respect to choice of replacement. That's why I'm trying to gather info now and try to get a head start on saving. I thought about doing an engine job as well (rings, valves etc....). All I want is a reliable engine in my ride. That's all

Why do you do this? What does it prevent/stop?

Few years ago I read somewhere that on the latest CY CVT Lancers and Airtreks mitsu engineers installed a device which automatically sets the car in neutral while at a stand still once your foot is on the brake. Reason given is it saves the cvt belts and also improves fuel mileage since the engine has no load now

That's strange because I rememebr reading somewhere where neutralising the gear isn't really a good thing to do. My link dcould have been wrong. I'll try to pull it up again and re-read. I think it was on Wikipedia.

4g92 engine usually gets and oil leak by the oil sensor located on the block. have that engine in my dad libero .... engine works dam good. only prob with age , the torque converter seal goes bad.
also with the 4g92 upgrade the exhaust pipe from front to back becuase on the libero it have like 4 resonators so car moves dead.
it has potential becuase i know or someone got a 92 mivec head and it run....but i prefer the 4g15dohc. parts easy to find.... gearbox in cosmos right now. and i never heard of no one complaining of that engine.
