Hey people, need some info, own a VRG GDI Galant - EA1A (sharkmouth). Recently my timing broke, really f#$% up my engine, valves probably bent (hope not) pistons probably have holes in them, what I want to know is can I replace the damaged parts or should I just scrapped the engine and just go for the 4G63T or 4G63, and what are the current average prices for the 4G63 turbo or non-turbo?

P.S. would have some 4G93 parts for sale, keep you guys posted.

Why not buy a fu head and block, that might be the cheaper option.

^^^ Many but some of the options are very expensive and they're difficult to come across, unless you have the money and time to invest in a serious upgrade and would actually be utilising it, best advise would be to stay stock, the gdi engines are not very problematic, they just suffer from bad maintenance and bad diagnosis from mechs that have no real idea of dealing with the engines.

The sr20 swap is very popular and would be cheaper than a comparable 4g93t swap :?

I would not recommend the way of the swap. Replacing the brokn parts with FU parts and keeping the stock set up will be best. Also you would not be messing with the value of your car

I finding little info on the Local 2.0 SOHC 4G63 Fuel Injected engine on the net, but choices look limited to me with Galant engines, atleast feasible choices that are 2.0 to push that heavy car thats not a GDI, or V6 engine

Believe me if you put in the sohc 4g63 that came in the local galant you'll start missing that gdi

What about when it's time for engine troubles, and have to head to a mechanic, would the GDi still be missed? :P

I'm all for taking care of an engine, but should an engine be babied as much as the GDIs? As Sensitive as they are. Also these engines will be bought used, how would one know how the previous (Japanese) owner treated it? (taking their need for pampering into account)

Don't think of it as pampering, maybe as a new sophisticated gf that's not into kfc ( i wouldn't say sensitive just different needs, synthetic oil changed on time, premium gas and a little intake manifold cleaning ever so often before any build up of carbon is all it needs, and not to throw it at your face but changing of timing belt on time with oem replacement done by a good mech, if the belt is tightened too much it bursts soon after, see the gdi engine tensions the belt after installing so too tight and it bursts soon after)

Best bet would be to get a mech to go with you and check the engine before purchase, in retrospect it's not that expensive to pay someone a few hundred bucks for their time to ensure that your time and investment is secure.

I see the 4G63 2.0 SOHC Fuel Injected (from the local Galants) and Rated at 136 HP
The 4G93 1.8 DOHC GDI is rated at 138 HP
And the 4G94 2.0 DOHC GDI is rated at 143HP
which is the common one found in the bamboo? the 4G93 GDI?

Both the 4g93 & 4g94 are available, these days the newer model that came e-throttle are easier to get.

Is the E-throttle the one that gives the problem with the magnets? converting from 4G63 to 4G93/94 I assume the transmission, harness and ECU must be changed>?

Yeah they've got the magnet problem. Ensure you get a good electrician though, minor mistake in wiring will have you searching for the elusive gremlin

The ideas sound good, especially buying a new head and block, that's if the guys in the bamboo will link you. Guess I'll stick with the upgrade; cause later on I plan to go turbo, already mod my suspension and the brakes soon to follow, so I was jus getting some other options and as you rightly say dem mechanics don't want to mess with a GDI engine at all like dey fraid.

Oh when I was talking about the 4g63 I was refering to DOHC not the SOHC, there is a bigger output in power from the previous one than the latter.

the complete conversion to vr4 can be had for approx 18k, cheaper than a healthy 4g63t, and honestly the powerband is more suited to the galant

On what car, vrg galants have a very good suspension, if you're not into racing leave it alone just ensure it's maintained properly.

Hey guys, I own a 96 VRG with the 1.8 4g93gdi. Previous owner did not pamper it as required and it's been punishing me over the last year with embarrassing breakdowns and engine trouble. Not to mention sub-par performance for such a high maintenance engine. INVECS and tiptronic tranny is fun tho. But never the less, the car is currently down atm. So far it has absorbed quite a lot of money and I'm not seeing the benefits. I want power and a 5 forward and I'm considering a 4g63 swap and do away with this 4g93 gdi waste of time.
