Evo II brakes

Postby Zh@ne » June 9th, 2010, 4:09 pm

Yeah fellas the back driver side caliper on my evo stop working.

I carried the car by a mechanic and the diagnostics are as follows:
1) the hand brakes cables is working cause u can see it engaging when u pull the lever.
2) the brake line is clear and not clogged cause brakes fluid shoots out whenever the brake peddle is mashed.
3) when u drive the car all other rotors are hot, where as the back driver side rotor is cold.

Hence we suspect that the caliper is at fault.

Does anyone know where i could get a replacement or if it can be repaired?

It can be repaired... only thing is i am not sure which seal would work... some say that the civic rear caliper seals are similar....

you will have to find a way to remove the piston from the caliper itself... probably use a compressed air and a block of wood to keep it from flying out like a missile...

Inspect the piston it should be shiny... if it has imperfections it will cause it to stick. If it has pitting (little craters) don't waste your time to clean it... just replace.

To clean, get a nice high grit sandpaper... 1200 -1500 should be good... and use some water with it and wet sand the piston of any imperfections... once the entire thing is smooth to the touch you should be fine. Inspect the interior of the caliper after removing the rubber seal and check for any damages... clean as well but not too much and do not sand where the seal fits.

wash it out and let it dry... same for the piston. get a replacement seal boot for the caliper and also the seal at the caliper. Now get some brake caliper grease... NO OTHER WILL DO! usually it's an orange color. spread a light film all over the outside of the piston but not too much. Put the boot on the piston and slide it back into the caliper housing... while making sure to get the boot back in properly. Once that is done, bolt the caliper back up. Bleed and give it a try.

Failing that, i'd check the proportioning valve...

It's possible. I believe there is a rachet system in this one as well will have to do some digging in a similar manual and see.

bring it buy me, we'll take it apart and check one of the shops in st james for seals that could work. i'm sure we might even get lucky at diamond motors. it will take 15 minutes to take apart that caliper.
