DIY - 4G92 Crank angle sensor check

Postby VIP2Nr » January 10th, 2011, 4:34 pm

Hi Guys, help needed with the verifying following on a local CK4 with the 4G92 Sohc engine.

Having an issue where my car is just cranking but not starting. Ended up getting it scanned and turned out to be the crank angle sensor had failed. After replacing it with a new one the car started fine, but after about 2 mins it started to stutter and cut off. Experiencing the same issue as before & yes the new sensor has failed as well.

Was in the process of doing some further troubleshooting as to what may have caused this and came across the below mentioned method from the manual which you can use to test the sensor yourself.

Tools needed: Multimeter
1. Testing the voltage on the harness connector for crank sensor.
According to the manual, disconnect the connector and switch on ignition.
Then, check the voltage on the harness side, between the red/yellow wire
and earth. You should get system voltage (should be close to your battery
voltage).
Next, check the voltage between the brown/green wire and earth. You should
a voltage between 4.8-5.2 v.

If the above two readings are in order your sensor is ok, and the problem could
exist with the connector/harness/ECU.

2. Testing the resistance of the crank sensor. << This information was gathered from online research
Check the resistance between the two connectors of the sensor as shown below.

The resistance should be between 500 and 900 ohms. If the resistance is zero,
it means the sensor has failed (this is what i am experiencing with both sensors).

For reference/comparison can someone post their voltage readings between the brown/green wire and earth, and also what resistance readings you got from your crank sensor.

Your input/corrections/advice are more than welcome, new to the whole EFI troubleshooting process. Next, i'm gonna take a look at the harness and ECU.

O.K. these are the values I am getting for the harness check:

red/yellow-earth: 11.66V

brown/green-earth: 4.97V

I am sorry, but for some reason (maybe due to my inexperience with a multimeter) I am not getting a resistance reading for the crank angle sensor itself. The car is working just fine however.

Can you post up the resistance check information you found on the net?

Thanks for your input rudman. I'll post the link a bit later.
I should be getting a working crank sensor today so'll very if this method is correct.

I also was unable to get a resistance reading on a working sensor. It seems that this method (step 2, above) doesn't apply to this type of sensor. There are two types of sensors a Hall Effect type and a Magnetic type. The one on the CK seems to be a hybrid of both (although the manual describes it as a Hall effect).
