Early morning /cold transmission delay in altezza

Postby roop999 » April 21st, 2013, 3:58 am

For the past 2 months i have been having an intermittent problem with my 1g fe auto tranny. Early morning shifts into reverse and to a lesser extent drive have an associated delay before the car moves out. About 5 seconds. The transmission works perfectly afterwards and no slipping at all.

One other thing is that if i park facing downhill , sometimes (not always) when i put in reverse, the delay is about 10 seconds. If i rev then then gear jumps in. Drive is normal.

i have suspicions about the filter needing changing but its hard to find one. Also the oil is only 4 weeks old, no leaks, no discoloration of oil, oil level ok. I mean if the transmission needs changing then fine when it gets there i will - but in the mean time any suggestions?????

pm me if similar issues or good referral for solution.

this happened to me in the past.....4A-FE engine though.

my problem was the speed sensor was goin bad......at times i had to wait up to 30 seconds for it to go in gear....found out after a diagnostic test....maybe u should get a diagnostic as well.

partner with a corolla had the same problem...he thought his transmission was goin tru....it turned out to be an electrical problem  i cant explain that one....he said his auto electrician did something and it start back workin normal. lol

i got it scanned by a place (cant remember the name at the moment) in chase village....not too far after u come off the flyover (on the triangle)....sorry for the bad directions. will edit when i remember / get more info.

yeh i had a problem code...and so did my mentioned friend. If i rev the engine while waiting for it to go in gear...the OD light will flash 2 times...thats all until it goes in gear.

my friend's OD light was just flashing constantly...one flash every 2 seconds....and his check engine light would come on.....the check engine light would stay on even after it went into gear....it wud eventually come off while driving

he bought a transmission treatment and when i saw him this morning he said its back to normal again......maybe u can look into getting a transmission treatment. I think he payed $40 for a bottle but u can find out from any parts place which is a good one.

Transmission treatment cannot fix the real problem. If toyota remained with their trend through the years then most likely is a metal tranny oil filter. You can do a pan drop, buy a brake parts cleaner or a throttle body cleaner and clean the filter out and reuse it. The newer engines and tranny's work best with expensive synthetic oils and tranny fluids. You shouldnt have any problems after that. A friend of mine had a tranny delay recently and the culprit was a aburst tranny mount.

I have the same problem with my 1GS-FE transmission, not the cold start though only when I park facing downhill did it happen. To be quite honest it only happened twice in the past year and after the first time I performed a treatment and it lasted a year without problems until now.

The best solution that was recommended is that it is the reverse sensor. What I want to know is how much is is going to cost?

To Stev,

Just repeating what I have been told on multiple occasions...they said reverse sensor.
I will ask about the speed sensor though...I have never heard of that...
Could you provide more details. Aren't these sensors located at multiple points on the drive train eg transmission and wheel hubs.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks.....

It could mean the same thing just the speed sensor relating to the reverse gear in particular....

Will check...

How I found out was through talking to people who had experienced the same thing.
Oh by the way the transmission that roop999 was talking about that is an A42DE right, I'm trying to figure out what mine is? It should be the same thing.
