AE100 transmission problems

Postby Information Officer » September 11th, 2012, 11:23 am

On my 1993 AE100 Corolla L touring wagon, the engine is 5afe, the automatic transmission won't shift into 4th gear, and it has no OD function. I flush the transmission , put it an additive in case there are solenoid sticking. the over drive light on the dash works. I also released the tension on the kick down cable but I am not getting the 4th gear. It worked once or twice but is completely gone now.
any ideas?

*update*
The overdrive light is working fine on the dash board, but because the 4th gear is not going in , the overdrive do not work. Can anybody advise as to what can I do to solve this problem.
I read on the net that aftermarket water temperature sensors can cause this problem.they also recommend that the overdrive solenoid need to be checked.

even though the o/d light is working on the dashboard, have you checked to see if 12v is reaching the o/d solenoid when switched on/off? also check to see if the o/d solenoid is in fact working.

It is working fine now. I used a smart blend additive in it.

looking for the two temperature sending units on the toyota 5a engine. I have the aftermarket, but I want the oem used parts. Anyone have a engine on the ground and willing to sell the parts?

thanks bro, but I am looking for the genuine. I have aftermarket ones. Genuine by Toyota is too expensive.

Is your "O/D Off" light flashing? Did it flash at all the entire time all this was happening?

what happened here?

You altered the contents of the transmission fluid and it worked for a while, but you're still convinced it's electrical? If the light doesn't flash, then there's a mechanical fault in the transmission.

Yes, an aftermarket CTS (coolant temperature sensor) will cause this (mine doesn't get overdrive until the needle comes off the cold mark), but again, you got it to work by adding something to the fluid so that tells me the problem is mechanical. Might be as simple as old fluid or a blocked strainer, might be as bad as a faulty/sticking overdrive solenoid or worn clutches.

Go through the phone book and seek out a transmission specialist. I know Jenton in Aranguez does test drives on a morning between 8 and 10, call them for an appointment.
