2003 corolla stuck in 1st gear

I have a 2003 corolla with the zze engine. today for the first time, i was driving and all of a sudden the car wasn't moving out of 1st gear. after a few mins of driving on 1st gear i tried accelerating and the gear changed as normal. How can this be explained and what corrective action should i take. the transmission fluid was at the full mark and had been changed a little over 1year ago.
