Redline at 180? Even our NZE crossed that. Was the overdrive on or off?

first of i not sure when over drive is on or off.i always get it mixed up.

from 140 -160 i have to press the over drive button ,the light comes on, otherwise it takes really long to reach 160.then i would press the over drive button and the dash board light comes off.

after 160 it gradually builds to 180.when it has stopped at 180 and i press the over drive button again the tachometer reaches red line, starts to bounce rapidly and the engine starts to limit.so basically now my speedometer is stopped at 180,engine limiting and tach redlining.

im not into driving at 220km/h its just that if the car supposed to make it i would like it to be working properly so it can make the proper top speed.

When the light is on, the o/d is off, meaning the car acts in a higher gear.

Taken from wikipedia : "Generally speaking, overdrive (OD) is the highest gear in the transmission. Overdrive allows the engine to operate at a lower rpm for a given road speed. This allows the vehicle to achieve better fuel efficiency, and often quieter operation on the highway. When it is switched on, an automatic transmission can shift into overdrive mode after a certain speed is reached (usually 70+ km/h [40-45 mph or more] depending on the load). When it is off, the automatic transmission shifting is limited to the lower gears. For an automatic transmission, it is almost always best to select overdrive and allow the transmission to control engagement of the overdrive."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overdrive_%28mechanics%29

So in short, if the car has 5 gears, with the o/d off (light on) the car would only go up to 4th gear, and with the o/d on ( light off) it would go into 5th. Hence why the car would redline at 180. Also, you have to remember these cars have small engines with little torque so to push past 180 gonna take a long stretch.

It should go very close to it, but plenty factors could affect how much you actually get. Oil, mileage, tyres and rim size and a couple more. You ever serviced your njectors and throttle body and whatever else they supposed to do in a tune up?

well i'm always researching things that im supposed to service or replace.

throttle body was taken of and cleaned, including air sensor (i think that's called the MAF :?)
serviced injectors, cleaned the entire rail and each injector
mobil 1 oil, fram oil filter, ngk iridium plugs, k&n washable flat filter, red coolant

all of the above was done between the beginning of the year till now

im looking into changing the fuel filter also i was told that there is a transmission filter that should be cleaned or changed.after that im going to replace my thermostat and pcv valve, but i dont think those things should cause me to limit at 180.
